Self-produced research salmon

By: Anne Sverdrup, December 20 2011
ILAB has reached a milestone: Self-produced research salmon ready for sale from December 15 2011.
ILAB has research fish (6-23 grams) available for sale these days. During may/june 2011 approximately 40 000 roe was added to the hatching facilities. The production time lasted 6 months and resulted in 35 000 juvenile salmon ready for sale. The salmon is specially adapted to both water quality and the rearing tanks used at ILAB. The goal is to deliver approximately 5 000 fish per month until summer 2012. The juvenile have an average weight of 20 grams.
There is an opportunity to reserve fry (5 grams). The fry is tested for pathogenic and is retested again at 15 grams.
We had a second delivery of roe in mid December and we are expecting 50 000 new research fish ready until summer 2012.

Salmon lice –
a strategic focus area for ILAB
By: Reidar Handegård, April 11 2011
ILAB is now making arrangements to enable universities and private sector companies to have research projects on salmon lice completed. The available capacity of specially adapted research facilities will be key in order to meet the challenges the salmon louse poses to the environment and the fish farming industry. Construction of a new annex for ILAB is expected to be completed during spring 2011. This will provide the necessary space for vital infrastructure to be implemented to enable research on salmon lice, production of egg strings, copepodites, preadult og adult salmon lice. The new space will considerably increase ILAB's capacity to offer these services.
