This paper is the project description of a recently started PhD-project. The main aim of the project is to explore how newsrooms define and handle multicultural issues in their everyday work. The project places itself in the tradition of news room studies with an emphasis on the editorial processes in the newsroom. A 6 month field work in NRK is planned, as well as 10 interviews with young journalists (of both ethnic minority and majority backgrounds). A special attention will be paid to how journalists understand their function in multicultural society as part of the “mission of journalism”. Another important perspective is to investigate what “multicultural journalistic competence” consists of. Social anthropological theories are central in the analysis. |
