ABOUT IMER/UIB

IMER/UiB is organised as a constituent centre-unit under the umbrella of Unifob Global . The activities of IMER/UiB are financed primarily through the University of Bergen and Norwegian Research Council.

Main activities at IMER

IMER/UiB is a meeting point for perspectives developed in social anthropology, sociology, political science, geography, mass communication science, history and philosophy. Empirical work is mostly carried out through comparative approaches in particular focusing on national (including Norwegian) and European contexts. Beside research activities, IMER/Norway/Bergen is involved in several other activities aiming to increase the importance of research-based knowledge about international migration and migrants situations in public debates.

  • In this work IMER/UiB has developed an information system that co-ordinates IMER/UiB related research in Norway. At the present, IMER/UiB on monthly basis distribute electronic newsletters on e-mail, informing researchers, students, bureaucrats, politicians etc. on latest IMER related research/publications, conferences, seminars, research programs, and ‘other’ news of interest. At the present IMER-news has around 1600 subscribers. You can subscribe to the newsletter and read old editions under 'Newsletter' on the navigation bar on the left.

  • A second activity performed by IMER/UiB in the Norwegian research environment, has been to assist in maintaining a high quality in masters and doctoral work. Besides, the fact that staff members at IMER/UiB are involved in tutoring work at the university, staff members also organize symposia and teaching tasks, intended both to attract students to imer related research and to support such research. These tasks are performed through a plethora of activities - research, seminars, tutoring, the organization of conferences, publications, etc.
