WORK PROFILE

Christine M. Jacobsen is a social anthropologist working in the field of International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER). Her work has focused on issues related to Muslim minorities in Europe (France and Norway) and in particular on continuities and changes in religious traditions, identities and practices in a context of international migration, globalization and secular modernity. She recently published 'Islamic Traditions and Muslim Youth in Norway', which sums up her work in this field. Jacobsen has also worked on transnational prostitution from a migration perspective, and on transnationalism and political mobilisation among young adults of minority background. Theoretically, Jacobsen’s work engages with poststructuralist and feminist theory, and with anthropological approaches to Islam as a discursive tradition. It deals with themes such as gender, migration, multiculturalism, transnationalism, citizenship, tradition, agency, law, religion and secularism. Jacobsen is currently a Senior Researcher at Uni Rokkansenteret, the Research Leader of IMER Bergen, and leads a new RCN (NFR) funded project on the Provision of Welfare to Irregular Migrants. She is a board member of NMF (Norsk Nettverk for Migrasjonsforskning) and NMR (Nordic Migration Research) and represents IMER Bergen in the Metropolis steering committee.
