Diversity and Citizenship:
The European Union, Minorities and Migrants

ACRONYM: DIVCIT

This is an "expression of interest" to the 6th European Union framework program ‘Citizenship, democracy and new forms of governance’, in particular the theme ‘New forms of citizenship and cultural identities’. Within the project, a European research competency is to be created regarding citizenship and belonging in the European Union, as these phenomena are related to the democratic deficit problem.

This project will deliver

  • Research-based knowledge on areas of contestation and conflict in developing inclusive democratic practices in present and future EU states, especially with regard to minorities, second/third country nationals, and Members States' extra-European citizens
  • identification of good local/national/supranational institutions and practices of citizenship and assessments of their transferability
  • a comparative citizenship database to serve as a basis for policy-making and for elucidating research challenges posed by changing notions of citizenship in a dynamic EU context
  • standardized analysis instruments utilizable both in this project and in future research and democratization work. An international consortium of 14 European partners are in the process of developing the project.
