Dagens IFT post viser at BABAR fysikken fortsetter å produsere en mengde resultater inn i 2008. Innen ”småkollaborasjoner” (”normalkategori”) er det IFT sine forskjellige kvanteteoretikere som dominerer med artikler fra partikkelfysikk (Osland et al), kjernefysikk (Csernai, Vaagen et al), atomfysikk (Førre et al) og termodynamisk modellering (Kvamme et al). Legg i den anledning merke til at kvantefysikk også nå tas opp som emne på informatikk, så dette spennende fagfeltet finnes i dag over hele 4 MatNat institutter! 

Den eneste rent eksperimentelle artikkel i normalkategorien er fra Holst et al ”Imaging with neutral atoms - a new matter-wave microscope”, hvor nye resultater fra He mikroskopet presenteres.  Denne artikkelen har kapret forsiden i Januarnummeret (http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/loi/JMI) av Journal of Microscopy og omtales denne uken også i Nature (se under).

Fra administrativt hold kan det meldes at det til tross for dystre spådommer ser ut til å bli en viss økonomi også i år! Solfrid sitt første overslag antyder et budsjett for 2008 som vil innebære omtrent samme økonomiske rammer for fellesprosjekter mens forskningsgruppene vil få noe mindre annum, totalt enn i fjor (tentativt 2/3 av 2007). Dette vil innen et par uker forligge for instituttrådet.

Bodil Holst artikkel om He mikroskopi omtales i Nature Research Highlights

” Electrons are commonly used to image materials at high resolution, but their negative charge and high energies can damage fragile samples. To get around this, a group of physicists used helium atoms instead, and successfully photographed a hexagonal copper mesh.

 

Bodil Holst at Graz University of Technology in Austria and her colleagues propelled helium through a nozzle and used a device known as a Fresnel zone plate to focus the beam onto the copper. This created an image with 2-micrometre resolution.

 

The experiment demonstrates that helium atoms can generate a picture even when fired at a sample much more slowly than would be required for electrons to produce an image. Holst says the technique might one day be used to image proteins and weak polymers.

EFTA/EØS-Midler: Utlysning Slovakia

Som del av EØS-avtalen skal EFTA/EØS-landene (Norge, Island og Liechtenstein) i perioden 2004-2009 overføre ca. 9,7 milliarder kroner til de nye EU-medlemslandene, samt Hellas, Portugal og Spania. 11 av landene har opprettet egne stipend- og opplæringsfond for en del av disse midlene. Det slovakiske stipendfondet har nå sin første utlysning, med søknadsfrist 31. mars 2008.

 

Fondet er åpent for videregående skoler og høyere utdanningsinstitusjoner. Norske institusjoner kan ikke søke direkte, men kan inngå partnerskap med slovakiske institusjoner for prosjektsamarbeid. Gjennom prosjektsamarbeidet kan norske institusjoner motta støtte fra fondet, for eksempel til studieturer og studieopphold i Slovakia. For de slovakiske institusjonene er det en forutsetning for godkjenning av søknaden at de kan vise til samarbeid eller intensjon om samarbeid med en institusjon i ett av EFTA/EØS-landene. En skriftlig intensjonserklæring må følge søknaden.

Lanseringskonferense for det nye Nordplus rammeprogrammet

Den 28. januar inviterer Senter for internasjonalisering av høgre utdanning (SIU) til lanseringskonferense for det nye Nordplus rammeprogram 2008-2011. Konferansen er relevant for alle som arbeider med eller informerer om utdanning. Nordplus er Nordisk Ministerråds største program på utdannings- og forskningsområdet. Konferansen holdes i Oslo Konserthus 28. januar 2008. Det er gratis å delta, men reise og eventuelt opphold må du dekke selv. Påmeldingsfrist er 23. januar 2008. EU-kommisjonen offentliggjorde på slutten av fjoråret "Call for proposals" for 2008. Selve utlysingen gjelder hele Program for livslang læring (LLP), men delprogrammene har egne søknadsskjemaer. Anna og jeg har nettopp arrangert en mini-vinterskole for studentene i Fys115+ (9-11. januar) og det virket som om studentene var veldig fornøyde.  Jeg håper at dette kan bli et årlig event (eller hvert annet år), kanskje sammen med UiO og NTNU.  Vi var heldige å få mange flotte forelesere som kan man kan se av agendaen: http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=23350

 

Jeg kan nevne bl.a . Jos Engelen (director of science at CERN), John Ellis og  Alavro de Rujula, begge de siste anerkjente teoretikere ved CERN.  Vi besøkte både ATLAS, CMS, CTF3, Compass, LEIR og datasenteret så studentene fikk se både de store detektorene, akselerator komplekset og fix-target eksperimenter samt hjertet av verdens nye datagrid (ALICE var desverre stengt).
