Evaluering av instituttleiarordninga - personalmøte med fakultetsdirektøren 28. mars

I samband med fakultetet si evaluering av instituttleiarordninga vil fakultetsdirektør Kjell Sælen besøke Institutt for fysikk og teknologi fredag 28. mars.

 

I fakultetsstyremøte 27.2.08 vart overordna rammer for evaluering av leiings- og styringsmodellen ved fakultetet handsama. Saksførelegg kan lesast her: http://www.uib.no/people/ngfge/2008/faksak_9_08.pdf  Dette blir eit av fleire tiltak for å få eit inntrykk av korleis ordninga har fungert. Fakultetsdirektøren sitt føremål med dette besøket er å få dei tilsette sine synspunkt på ordninga med tilsett instituttleiar. For at alle ulike synspunkt skal kome fram oppfordrar vi alle tilsette til å møte fram, og kanskje særleg dei som ikkje har ytra seg så sterkt tidlegare. Fakultetsdirektøren ønskjer å snakke med flest mogleg av dei fast tilsette, og det blir sett av 20 minutt til personleg samtale med kvar. Sælen har reservert heile dagen til vårt institutt.

 

For å kunne organisere  dette må dei som ønskjer samtale sende melding til grete.ersland@ift.uib.no innen 26. mars, eller melde frå til administrasjonssjefen på anna vis. Meld samtidig om undervisning slik at vi kan unngå kollisjon.

Påskestenging av bygget / påskeferie

På grunn av redusert aktivitet på bygget blir Bjørn Trumpys hus stengt hele påskeveka, dvs. frå og med lørdag15.3 til og med mandag 24.3. Administrasjonen blir bemanna mandag 17. og tirsdag 18.3.

 

Samtidig minner vi om at det er vanlig arbeidsdag mandag og tirsdag i påskeveka, mens onsdag er arbeidstida fram til kl. 12.00. Dersom ein tar fri desse dagane må det tas som ferie eller avspasering.

Comparison of a new neuromuscular transmission monitor compressomyograph with mechanomyograph

Abstract: Background. We developed a new neuromuscular transmission monitor, the compressomyograph (CMG, European patent number: EP 06018557.6, US patent number: US 60/824.541). This is the first preliminary report comparing neuromuscular block monitored by CMG and the Relaxometer((R)) mechanomyograph (MMG).

Methods. The two monitors were randomly allocated to the left or right hands of 16 patients. T-1, first twitch of the train-of-four (TOF) expressed as percentage of control response, and the TOF ratio (T-4:t(1)) were used to evaluate the neuromuscular block produced by rocuronium 0.6 mg kg(-1).

Results. The CMG monitor exhibited no pre-relaxation reverse fade (T-4 > T-1) or T-1 exceeding 100%. There was no significant difference in mean (SD) onset time, Dur(25) (time to T-1 25% recovery), or Dur(0.9) (time to 0.9 TOF ratio recovery) measured by the CMG [2.4 (0.9), 22.6 (4.1), 43.1 (10.3) min, respectively] compared with MMG [2.1 (0.9), 22.9 (3.3), 43.3 (10.0) min, respectively]. According to Bland and Altman analysis, the bias (upper and lower limits of agreement) for T-1% was -0.3% (+13.4% and -13.8%) and for TOF ratio was -0.009 (+0.068 and -0.085). CMG showed 100% sensitivity and 75% specificity in indicating full relaxation for tracheal intubation, and 80% sensitivity with 86% specificity in predicting MMG 0.9 TOF ratio.

Conclusions. The CMG could be a reliable clinical monitor in the daily anaesthesia practice that does not require time to set up or rigid support of the arm.

 

Bootstrap and the physical values of pi N resonance parameters

Abstract: This is the sixth paper in the series developing the formalism to manage the effective scattering theory of strong interactions. Relying on the theoretical scheme suggested in our previous publications we concentrate here on the practical aspect and apply our technique to the elastic pion-nucleon scattering amplitude. We test numerically the pi N spectrum sum rules that follow from the tree-level bootstrap constraints. We show how these constraints can be used to estimate the tensor and vector NN rho coupling constants. Last, we demonstrate that the tree-level low-energy expansion coefficients computed in the framework of our approach show a nice agreement with known experimental data. These results allow us to claim that the extended perturbation scheme is quite reasonable from the computational point of view.

 

Measurements of hydrate formation in sandstone

Abstract: Methane and carbon dioxide hydrates were formed in sandstone samples for a series of laboratory experiments to evaluate gas production scenarios from natural gas hydrates. Methods were developed that yield rapid and complete conversion of the water and gas mixtures in the pores into a solid hydrate phase. Hydrates were formed under a range of conditions including initial water and gas saturations, water composition, and temperature. The sandstone is from the Bentheim formation and is characterized by a quartz-rich framework with small amounts of clay in pores that average 125 microns in diameter. The sandstone samples were placed in a pressurized sample holder that was suitable for MRI imaging. Sample confining pressure was maintained with cooled Fluorinert run through a home-built heat-exchanger that effectively controlled the sample temperature to within 0.1 degrees C over several months for a given experiment. Methane and carbon dioxide hydrates were formed at similar to 4 degrees C and 8.3 MPa gas pressure. Hydrate formation was monitored with a combination of MRI images, permeability measurements and pressure-volume data from the pumps that control gas and water supply to the sample. Hydrate formation rates and patterns were extracted from these various data sources and were used in larger-scale simulations of hydrate behavior in reservoirs. The ease and reproducibility of hydrate formation allows for investigations into the hydrate rock physics problem of how to characterize the distribution of hydrates in pores.

 

Parameterization of the inherent optical properties of Murchison Bay, Lake Victoria

Abstract: Lake Victoria, Africa's largest freshwater lake, suffers greatly from negative changes in biomass of species of fish and also from severe eutrophication. The continuing deterioration of Lake Victoria's ecological functions has great long-term consequences for the ecosystem benefits it provides to the countries bordering its shores. However, knowledge about temporal and spatial variations of optical properties and how they relate to lake constituents is important for a number of reasons such as remote sensing, modeling of underwater light fields, and long-term monitoring of lake waters. Based on statistical analysis of data from optical measurements taken during half a year of weekly cruises in Murchison Bay, Lake Victoria, we present a three-component model for the absorption and a two-component model for the scattering of light in the LTV and the visible regions of the solar spectrum along with tests of their ranges of validity. The three-component input to the model for absorption is the chlorophyll-alpha (Chl-alpha), total suspended materials concentrations, and yellow substance absorption, while the two-component input to the model for scattering is the Chl-alpha concentration and total suspended materials. Solidification kinetics of Fe0.5Pt0.5 clusters in an Ar carrier gas: Molecular dynamics simulations

Abstract: Small clusters exhibit different behaviors in many physical properties compared to bulk systems. A longstanding problem in cluster science is the question how small clusters solidify. Here, we analyze the solidification of small Fe0.5Pt0.5 clusters by molecular dynamics simulation. We use a carrier gas thermostat in the simulations to mimic the experiment rather than an idealized ensemble. This enables us to explore the solidification process under more realistic conditions. We find that structure formation starts below the surface layers and spreads quickly throughout the cluster. We observe apparent negative thermal expansion and apparent negative heat capacity. These effects and the related solidlike-liquidlike dynamic coexistence are explained kinetically by means of the short duration of cluster solidification in connection with a slow heat removal.

 

Elastic response of the resurrection fern Polypodium polypodioides during rehydration

Abstract: The resurrection fern (Polypodium polypodioides) has a remarkable elastic reponse, where the fast water uptake of the fern upon rehydration is accompanied by a significant reduction in its Young's modulus. In this letter, we discuss the fern's elastic response and suggest that by mimicking its structure, one should be able to design materials exhibiting interesting elastic behavior. Abstract:  BaBar continues to publish studies with its unique sample of close to 400 million B-meson pairs. Some of this month's publications concern searches for extremely rare dacay modes of the B. Stringent  experimental limits on such modes put constraints on models beyond the  Standard Model. Since B mesons decay very frequently to charmed (D) mesons, extensive studies are also made of D-mesons. Finding D-Dbar oscillations has been one of the major successes of these studies. This time, limits on CP-violation in the charmed sector are reported by studying the time dependence of the   oscillationsin the neutral D-Dbar system.
