En kort utgave med to spennende seminar hvortil oppfordres deltakelse. Uken startet med en vellykket åpning av det nye Heliummikroskoplaboratoriet og denne saken har fått mye oppmerksomhet i media også denne uken. Et flott ”avslutningsoppslag” om det mangeårige pixie prosjektet er også tilgjengelig!

Acoustic methods for assessment and regulation of Norwegian fish resources; status and challenges.

 

The use of underwater acoustic methods for stock abundance estimation has a long tradition in Norway, and Norwegian scientific equipment for surveying is presently the world “standard”. The presentation will give a short introduction to the basic methods used, but with a focus on coming challenges. Problem areas presented are: (1): Radiated noise from the measurement platform. (2) Measuring the mean target strength of small individuals in dense concentrations or in deep water. (3): Acoustic species identification and sizing. (4) Boundary problems. (5): Calibrating a multi-beam, wideband sonar. (7): A few selected research areas in marine acoustics with too low activity.

  Professor Abraham Chian

  National Institute for Space Research (INPE), Brazil

 

  Abstract: The plasma universe is an electrodynamically complex system dominated by nonlinear phenomena such as Alfvén and Langmuir intermittent turbulence. Alfvén waves/turbulence - related to fluctuations in the ambient magnetic field - play an important role in the dynamics of solar-terrestrial environment, in the evolution of star forming regions, and in the formation of large-scale structures in the early universe. Radio emissions emitted by Langmuir turbulence - related  to fluctuations of electron and ion densities - provide a remote electromagnetic tracer of nonthermal plasma processes (e.g., magnetic reconnection) occurring in the ionosphere, magnetosphere, solar wind, and solar active regions. The dynamical systems approach is capable of elucidating the onset of turbulence as well as the chaotic nature of the plasma universe.

Program for samarbeid i høyere utdanning mellom Norge og Nord-Amerika 2008-2011

Partnerskapsprogrammet for økt kontakt mellom norske og nordamerikanske læresteder gir støtte til faglig fundert samarbeid, med sikte på langsiktige, institusjonelt forankrede samarbeidsrelasjoner med Canada og USA.

 

Partnerskapsprogrammet er et kvalitetsprogram som omfatter alle fag. Søknader innen områdene klimaendring, alternativ energi og multikulturelle samfunn er likevel spesielt velkommen.

 

SIU har satt som krav at alle norske partnerinstitusjoner skal gjøre en institusjonell vurdering og rangering av prosjektsøknadene før de sendes til SIU og det nasjonale programstyret for endelig avgjørelse. Det er oppnevnt en ad-hoc komité som skal gjøre denne institusjonelle behandlingen av prosjektsøknadene på UiB.

 

Fristen for UiBs søkere til å oversende sine partnerskapsprosjektsøknader til den oppnevnte ad-hoc komitéen er satt til FREDAG 16. MAI 2008. Prosjektssøknadene skal oversendes elektronisk som vedlegg på e-post til Bjorn.Andersen@fa.uib.no
