Bedre før( r )e var; på ekstraordinært ledermøte i går ble to viktige saker behandlet. Den ene er omtalt under, den andre omhandler årets julebord: En konsensusavgjørelse om at julebordet til IFT finner sted fredag 5. desember ble raskt truffet. Alle bes med dette om å merke tidspunktet i sine 7ende sanser allerede nå slik at vi kan bli fler enn 80 deltakere som er rekordnoteringen fra i fjor!

 

4 nye artikler er publisert på ISI i løpet av uken: Målevitenskap med Maad, Hjertaker og Johansen står for halvparten! De rapporterer blant annet utvikling av et system for datainnsamling og kontroll av gammastråling.  En rapport fra det indre av Atlas detektoren og nye resultater fra alltid aktive Ilea,  Kosinski og Hoffmann er også notert!

 

Så håper jeg mange åpner helgen med å stille på fellesseminar!

Uttalelse fra IFT

 

Instituttets ledergruppe (untatt nestleder) har hatt møte om saken sammen med instituttrådsleder. Der var enighet om følgende punkter som innspill til fakultetets styremøte 3. September

 

1) Vi beklager den korte fristen som har umuligjort grundig behandling i instituttrådet.

 

2) Vi understreker at det som kjent er forskjellige syn på hva som er

den mest tjenlige ledelsesform blant de ansatte ved vårt fakultet.

 

3) Vi mener den evalueringsprosessen som fakultetet selv er i gang med må bli det viktigste elementet i forhold til fakultetets fremtidige organisering.

 

4) Vi mener på generelt grunnlag at universitetet bør ha en enhetlig

utøvende ledelse og et representativt sammensatt kontrollerende organ på

alle nivåer.

A data acquisition and control system for high-speed gamma-ray tomography

Abstract: A data acquisition and control system (DACS) for high-speed gamma-ray tomography based on the USB (Universal Serial Bus) and Ethernet communication protocols has been designed and implemented. The high-speed gamma-ray tomograph comprises five 500 mCi Am-241 gamma-ray sources, each at a principal energy of 59.5 keV, which corresponds to five detector modules, each consisting of 17 CdZnTe detectors. The DACS design is based on Microchip's PIC18F4550 and PIC18F4620 microcontrollers, which facilitates an USB 2.0 interface protocol and an Ethernet (IEEE 802.3) interface protocol, respectively. By implementing the USB- and Ethernet-based DACS, a sufficiently high data acquisition rate is obtained and no dedicated hardware installation is required for the data acquisition computer, assuming that it is already equipped with a standard USB and/or Ethernet port. The API (Application Programming Interface) for the DACS is founded on the National Instrument's LabVIEW (R) graphical development tool, which provides a simple and robust foundation for further application software developments for the tomograph. The data acquisition interval, i.e. the integration time, of the high-speed gamma-ray tomograph is user selectable and is a function of the statistical measurement accuracy required for the specific application. The bandwidth of the DACS is 85 kBytes s(-1) for the USB communication protocol and 28 kBytes s(-1) for the Ethernet protocol. When using the iterative least square technique reconstruction algorithm with a 1 ms integration time, the USB-based DACS provides an online image update rate of 38 Hz, i.e. 38 frames per second, whereas 31 Hz for the Ethernet-based DACS. The off-line image update rate (storage to disk) for the USB-based DACS is 278 Hz using a 1 ms integration time. Initial characterization of the high-speed gamma-ray tomograph using the DACS on polypropylene phantoms is presented in the paper.

 

Semi-empirical scatter correction model for high-speed gamma-ray tomography

Abstract: Scattered radiation decreases the signal-to-noise ratio and the contrast of gamma-ray transmission tomography by introducing error in the measured tomography data and consequently error into the reconstruction algorithm. In order to minimize the effect of scattered radiation in multiple source gamma-ray tomographs, collimator blades are used in front of each detector. In the work presented here, the contribution and effect of scattered radiation emerging from multiple low-energy gamma-ray sources in the high-speed gamma-ray tomograph at the University of Bergen (UiB) are investigated. The scattered radiation has been determined experimentally using polypropylene phantoms to represent multiphase flow conditions. The results of these measurements are presented and a semi-empirical scatter correction model has been developed and successfully tested.

 

 

The evaporative cooling system for the ATLAS inner detector

Abstract: This paper describes the evaporative system used to cool the silicon detector structures of the inner detector sub-detectors of the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The motivation for an evaporative system, its design and construction are discussed. In detail the particular requirements of the ATLAS inner detector, technical choices and the qualification and manufacture of final components are addressed. Finally results of initial operational tests are reported. Although the entire system described, the paper focuses on the on-detector aspects. Details of the evaporative cooling plant will be discussed elsewhere.

 

 

Simulation of a dust lifting process with rough walls

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present results of Eulerian-Lagrangian simulations of the dust lifting behind a shock wave in a two-dimensional domain with rough walls. Since inter-particle and particle-wall collisions are important for the development of the process, simulating walls with a certain roughness is of interest influencing the trajectories of the near-wall particles, which then exchange momentum with particles higher up on the layer. Results of the simulations are shown as snapshots of particle positions at certain points in time. Comparisons between simulations with smooth walls and rough walls with varying initial dust layer thicknesses and number of particles are presented. Statistical data from the simulations are compared, such as average particle height and the number of particle- particle collisions, as is the mechanical energy lost in collisions. For the rough wall simulations, statistics relating the inclination of the virtual-wall with the emergent vertical velocity of particles and the energy lost in collisions are shown for different Gaussian distributions of angles. It was found that the general lifting effect is more intense in the rough wall simulations, the difference increasing with layer thickness. The statistical and energy data also showed significant differences between the smooth and rough wall simulations.
