Fra Instituttledelsen
Dette har vært en fantastisk uke for alle fysikere. Den vellykkede oppstarten av LHC har vært
dominerende i media gjennom nyhetsoppslag, intervjuer og en kronikk. Lenker til
en del av oppslagen er samlet under. Det er all grunn til å gratulere hele
gruppen for subatomær fysikk, ingeniører og studenter med mange års hardt
arbeid som nå legger grunnen for det viktigste ved grunnforskning: at
eksperimentene som skal utføres fører til en ny og bedre forståelse for det
universet vi (opplever at) vi lever i.
Det noterses også på publikasjonsiden to arbeider i tillegg
til en rekke Babar resultater: Per Osland og kolleger har modelleret Higgsfysikk
og Stein Håland et al. har studert plasmakonveksjon
indusert av solstormer.

Masterstudent fra IFT
valgt inn i styret for IAPS
Ragnhild Schrøder Hansen er valgt som styremedlem i
International Association of physics
students (IAPS) i et år fra 1. september 2008. IAPS ble startet i 1986 etter
den første internasjonale fysikkstudentkonferansen, som ble holdt i Budapest i
Ungarn. IAPS består av både nasjonale
foreninger, lokale foreninger og individuelle medlemmer fra bl.a Mexico, Taiwan, USA og
Ghana i tillegg til mange europeiske
land. Styret har medlemmer fra Portugal, Nederland, Irland, Ukraina, Romania og Norge.
IAPS har hovedkvarter hos EPS i Mulhouse, og har godt
samarbeid med flere fysikkorganisasjoner i hele verden. IAPS holder i august
hvert år en internajonal fysikkstudentkonferanse. I år ble denne holdt i
Krakow, Polen og hadde ca 400 deltagere fra hele verden. Neste år vil den bli i
Split i Kroatia. Det arrangeres også en del turer av IAPS, eksempelvis til
ESTEC i Nederland (april 2008) og Chernobyl (mai 2009).
Ragnhild Schrøder Hansen har nettopp begynt på
masterstudiet i romfysikk ved IFT.

antarktisk i 2009 i forbindelse med International Polar Year. Norske

analysegruppe inviterer med dette til årets karaktersamling for å diskutere
aktuelle problemstillinger innen karaktersetting i Universitets- og
høgskolesektoren. På bakgrunn av tilbakemeldinger fra konferansene Karaktersetting
i UH-sektoren – En felles plattform 24. januar 2007, og karaktersamlingen
29. oktober i 2007, har utdanningsutvalget vedtatt å arrangere årlige
samlinger. Hovedhensikten er få til en felles forståelse for karaktersetting
gjennom å diskutere aktuelle problemstillinger og sammen se på hvordan en bør
arbeide videre.

Trilinear Higgs

Abstract:
We carry out a detailed analysis of the general two Higgs doublet model with CP
violation. We describe two different parametrizations of this model, and then
study the Higgs boson masses and the trilinear Higgs couplings for these two
parametrizations. Within a rather general model, we find that the trilinear
Higgs couplings have a significant dependence on the details of the model, even
when the lightest Higgs boson mass is taken to be a fixed parameter. We include
radiative corrections in the one-loop effective potential approximation in our
analysis of the Higgs boson masses and the Higgs trilinear couplings. The
one-loop corrections to the trilinear couplings of the two Higgs doublet model
also depend significantly on the details of the model, and can be rather large.
We study quantitatively the trilinear Higgs couplings, and show that these
couplings are typically several times larger than the corresponding standard
model trilinear Higgs coupling in some regions of the parameter space. We also
briefly discuss the decoupling limit of the two Higgs doublet model.

Abstract: A
major part of the plasma in the Earth's magnetotail is populated through
transport of plasma from the solar wind via the magnetotail lobes. In this
paper, we present a statistical study of plasma convection in the lobes for
different directions of the interplanetary magnetic field and for different
geomagnetic disturbance levels. The data set used in this study consists of
roughly 340 000 one-minute vector measurements of the plasma convection from
the Cluster Electron Drift Instrument (EDI) obtained during the period February
2001 to June 2007. The results show that both convection magnitude and
direction are largely controlled by the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). For
a southward IMF, there is a strong convection towards the central plasma sheet
with convection velocities around 10 km(-1) . During periods of northward IMF,
the lobe convection is almost stagnant. A B-y dominated IMF causes a rotation
of the convection patterns in the tail with an oppositely directed dawn-dusk
component of the convection for the northern and southern lobe. Our results
also show that there is an overall persistent duskward component, which is most
likely a result of conductivity gradients in the footpoints of the magnetic
field lines in the ionosphere.
