Masterstudent og
snart millionær?

Forrige laurdag, på TV2 i beste sendetid, dukka
mastergradsstudenten Arne Skodvin Kristoffersen opp på skjermen. Han var ein av
8 håpefulle som ville konkurrera om ein million kroner, på spørjeprogrammet "Vil du bli millionær?". Med sikker
sans for dramatikk lot Kristoffersen dei to første kvalifiseringsoppgåvene gå
forbi, før han vann siste kvalifiseringsoppgåve då det berre var snaue ti
minuttar igjen av programmet.
Vel oppe i stolen, og presentert for det ganske land av
Sarah Natasha Melbye, var Arne uslåeleg. Han innsåg straks at
"Tryllesaksofonen" ikkje var ein opera av Mozart. På fem minuttar
svarte han på like mange spørsmål, med aukande vanskegrad, og 20 000 kroner
vart sikra luringen frå atomfysikk og optikk-gruppa då han kunne slå fast at
R2-D2 var ein robot. På grunn av den flotte innsatsen, skal Kristoffersen
tilbake i stolen igjen neste laurdag. Denne gangen er det ingen hemmelighet, og
alle som kjenner han kjem til å benka seg framfor skjermen, i det Arne på ny
skal i elden på direktesendt fjernsyn, kl. 20:00 på TV2.
Arne føler likevel ikkje noko større press denne gongen.
"Det viktigeste var å klare kvalifiseringen," seier Arne. "Og
når jeg i tillegg har klart første garantisum på 10 000 kr, er det bare å
slappe av." For glupingen frå
Klokkarvik er det ikkje viktig å få
med seg mykje pengar heim. Snarare gjeld det å gi sjåarane heime litt spenning i kvardagen.
Han kjem til å satsa hardt på å nå garantisum 100 000 kr, og med alle
hjelpemiddela i behald, ser han ikkje dette som umogeleg. Og som Arne seier:
"Litt gambling har aldri skada nokon." Gevinsten vil bli brukt på
kake til alle på lesesalen resten av
studiet.

Abstract: We present
helium atom scattering experiments from the vitreous silica surface. Time-of-flight
data of scattered He-atoms have been recorded at varying temperature and as a
function of parallel momentum transfer. A dominant elastic peak and two broad
features at approximate to 4 meV, one each on the phonon annihilation and
creation side, are observed in all spectra. The thermal measurements between
127.0 and 368.5 K unveil clear Debye-Waller attenuation behavior of the elastic
peak and indicate that scattering occurs in the single-phonon regime below 200
K. The root-mean-square vibration amplitude at room temperature is estimated to
be 0.014 nm with a corresponding surface Debye temperature of 340 +/- 20 K and
an effective mass of 18 a.u. The obtained values agree well with bulk values
under the assumption of force constants at the surface reduced by one-half. The
wave-vector dependence of the Debye-Waller exponent indicates a well depth of
the atom-surface interaction potential of 10 +/- 2 meV. The broad inelastic
features on the phonon creation and annihilation sides are identified as the
surface manifestation of the boson peak phenomenon in amorphous materials. An
unusual shifting of the boson peak modes to higher energies with increasing
temperature is observed. Measurements at different parallel momentum transfers
unveil a nondispersive behavior of the boson peak mode.
Protection from
phototoxic injury during surgery and endoscopy in erythropoietic Protoporphyria

Abstract: Erythropoietic
protoporphyria is an inherited condition characterized by pronounced solar
photosensitivity and in a minority of patients severe liver disease that
necessitates liver transplantation for survival. Phototoxic injury to abdominal
organs and skin has been reported in several cases of liver transplantation
surgery, including a few transplants in which protective light filters were
used. This study discusses the optimal characteristics of light filters used
during liver transplantation surgery. An experimental model is used to evaluate
the relative protection of different filters, and the results are compared with
theoretical calculations regarding the risk for phototoxic injury from light
sources in health-care procedures. Whether protective measures are warranted in
other illuminated procedures besides liver transplantation has been discussed
often but never studied. This study elucidates the risk for phototoxic injury
in endoscopy, laparoscopy, and non-liver transplant surgery. A theoretical
model and epidemiological data are considered. Our findings indicate that endoscopy,
laparoscopy, and surgical procedures other than liver transplantation are safe
in the noncholestatic protoporphyria patient and that general recommendations
for using filters in these situations are not warranted. Among the tested
filters, a flexible yellow filter omitting wavelengths below 470 nm is
recommended for liver transplant surgery. This filter has been readily accepted
by surgeons and offers a good balance between protection and altered visual
color perception. The experimental model, using hemolysis of
protoporphyrin-loaded erythrocytes as a measure of phototoxicity, has
substantiated theoretical findings on relative filter protection.
