I dag forsvarer Trygve Buanes for første gang i UiB sin historie to doktorgrader på samme dag. Arbeidene er gjennomført omtrent på gjennomsnittlig tid for en doktorgrad på  UiB for øvrig.

 

Når vi har omtalt og promotert denne prestasjonen har vi mottatt to forskjellige reaksjoner. Den første har vært en lunken og tildels negativ av typen ”dette er vel ikke i strid med reglene, men neppe ønskelig” eller antydninger om at ”dette kan devaluere andre som gjennomfører kun en grad”.  Den andre typen reaksjon har vært positiv; ”dette er jo en fantastisk prestasjon”, og ”her har dere en kandidat dere virkelig skal være stolte av”.  

 

La meg derfor på denne plass si at jeg mener den første reaksjonen viser manglende forståelse for hva et godt universitet skal være: En tumleplass for hardt arbeidende dedikerte forskere som gis mulighet til å nå så langt som bare deres eget intellekt og arbeidskapasitet setter grensene for.  I en slik omgivelse vil noen frembringe utrolige resultater med jevne mellomrom, det være seg studieprestasjoner eller enkeltvise vitenskapelige oppdagelser.

 

Trygves produksjon av to avhandlinger tilhører en slik klasse av resultater. Vi skal være – og er – utelukkende stolte over at han har klart dette – og ønsker lykke til med sine to forsvar i dag,

Nyheter og generell informasjon

 

 

Vinterskole på CERN

5-7 november var studentene i ”PHYS115 – Kvantefysikk og statistisk mekanikk” på vinterskole i CERN. Dagene var delt opp i en lett blanding av gode forelesinger innen relevante partikkel-/kjernefysikktemaer og omvisninger i LHC kontrollrom, ATLAS detektoren og datalagringsavdelingen (Computing). Programmet var godt sydd i sammen av Heidi Sandaker, som for andre gang har tatt med studenter i dette emnet til CERN. I tillegg bidro Anna Lipniacka med planleggingen, og Gerald Eigen og Dieter Röhrich holdt foredrag. Vinterskolen på CERN hadde også deltakende studenter fra UiO og NTNU.

Norge satser på ASIM!

Jeg har faatt vite fra Terje Wahl i romsenteret at Norge har lagt de  noedvendige penger i ELIPS-3 programmet for aa realisere ASIM. Norge fikk ogsaa ESA general direktoer til aa garantere at pengene skal gaa til ASIM og ikke andre prosjekter som hoerer inn under ELIPS-3. Danmark og Spania har ogsaa lagt inn penger i ELIPS-3, saa alt ligger naa

til rette for at ASIM blir realisert. Dette er en stor tillitserklaering til romfysikk/mikroelektronikk miljoet i Bergen, for vi snakker om et stort prosjekt.

Krysspeiling i kupert terreng - MNT-konferansen 2009

 

På vegne av Kunnskapsdepartementet arrangerer NTNU en konferanse om rekruttering til og gjennomstrømning i matematikk-, natur- og teknologifag (MNT) innen høyere utdanning.

Konferansen finner sted 28. og 29. januar 2009.

Navnet på årets MNT-konferanse er hentet fra orienteringsterminologien og beskriver hvordan du med utgangspunkt i to markerte terrengformasjoner kan finne ut hvor du står. Rekruttering og gjennomstrømning er de terrengformasjonene vi trenger for å stikke ut vår kurs videre.  Mange studiesteder sliter med lave søkertall og høyt frafall innen MNT-fag. Hvorfor?
- Gir markedsføringen av fagene realistiske forventninger?
- Hvordan måler vi egentlig gjennomstrømning?
- Hva er sammenhengen mellom rekruttering og gjennomstrømning?

Konferansen passer for deg som jobber med rekruttering og studiekvalitet i MNT-fagene innen høyere utdanning, studieveiledere og rådgivere i videregående skole, realfagslærere og realfagslærerstudenter. Andre som er interessert i disse temaene er selvsagt velkomne.

Konferansen er gratis. Det tilbys reisestøtte til de 30 første tilreisende realfagslærerstudentene som melder seg på.

Solar wind drivers of large geomagnetically induced currents during the solar cycle 23

Abstract: In this paper we investigate the interplanetary drivers of the largest geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) during the solar cycle 23. Interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) are the major causes of intense geomagnetic storms and large GIC. In particular, in this work we examine the effectiveness of different structures embedded in an ICME (namely sheath regions, ejecta, and boundary layers) in causing large GIC. It was found that when an ICME interacts with the Earth's magnetosphere the most intense GIC activity is likely to take place during the passage of the turbulent sheath region. The effectiveness of sheath regions in driving large GIC is possibly due to their capability to trigger substorms and to drive intense directly driven ionospheric activity. We also investigated the relationships between different solar wind parameters and the GIC amplitudes. The best correlation with the GIC amplitudes was found with the solar wind electric field and the epsilon parameter. Ejecta-associated GIC seem to require an on-going magnetospheric Dst storm while sheath regions and boundary layers can cause large GIC even when no activity is taking place in terms of Dst. Interestingly, four of the nine ejecta-associated GIC took place during the recovery phases of a intense magnetic storm (but when Dst still was having storm time values below -50 nT).

Abstract: A small set of final prototypes of the ATLAS Inner Detector silicon tracking system (Pixel Detector and SemiConductor Tracker), were used to take data during the 2004 Combined Test Beam. Data were collected from runs with beams of different flavour (electrons, pions, muons and photons) with a momentum range of 2 to 180 GeV/c. Four independent methods were used to align the silicon modules. The corrections obtained were validated using the known momenta of the beam particles and were shown to yield consistent results among the different alignment approaches. From the residual distributions, it is concluded that the precision attained in the alignment of the silicon modules is of the order of 5 m m in their most precise coordinate.
