SIR-2, som er et av de 11 instrumentene om bord i den indiske månesatellitten Chandryaan-1, ble slått på for første gang 19. november 2008 etter at satellitten nådde sin endelige polare bane i 100 km høyde rundt månen 12. november.

Dette arrangementet er en del av et europeisk prosjekt der forskere og forskning i hele Europa formidler sine aktiviteter til publikum. Gode forslag til lokale arrangementer har nå mulighet til få delfinansiering! Arrangementet må inneholde formidling av forskning, og det må finne sted ettermiddag/kveld fredag 25. september 2009. Søknader sendes forskningsdagene@forskningsradet.no innen 18. desember 2008 kl. 1400.

Formation of FeCl2/NaCl-nanoparticles in supercritical water investigated by molecular dynamics simulations: nucleation rates

Abstract: Nucleation and growth of FeCl2 in supercritical water containing NaCl at different state points between temperatures of 798 and 873 K and system densities between 0.24 and 0.14 g cm(-3) have been studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The number of NaCl ion pairs was chosen to simulate particle formation in seawater and brine of higher salinity. Rigid SPC/E water was used to model the water molecules while a combination of Coulomb and Lennard-Jones potentials was used for the ions. Two different methods for determination of nucleation rates are applied and their results compared. We find decreasing nucleation rates with both increasing temperature and decreasing system density. Our results are also compared to those we recently obtained in an investigation of pure FeCl2 from supercritical water. We find both increasing nucleation rates and a decreasing size of the critical cluster with increasing amount of NaCl.

 

Retrieval of the physiological state of human skin from UV-Vis reflectance spectra - A feasibility study

Abstract: We test the feasibility of using an accurate radiative transfer model for the coupled air-tissue system in conjunction with a classic inversion scheme based on Bayesian optimal estimation theory for retrieval of parameters describing the physiological state of human skin. To that end, we analyse ultraviolet and visible reflectance spectra from human skin measured before, immediately after, and on each day for two weeks after photodynamic treatment with the hexyl ester of ALA and exposure to red light (632 nm). For the first time, we show that it is possible to perform a simultaneous retrieval of the melanosome concentration in both the basal and the upper layers of the epidermis. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. The integration and engineering of the ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker Barrel

Abstract: The ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) was built in three sections: a barrel and two end-caps. This paper describes the design, construction and final integration of the barrel section. The barrel is constructed around four nested cylinders that provide a stable and accurate support structure for the 2112 silicon modules and their associated services. The emphasis of this paper is directed at the aspects of engineering design that turned a concept into a fully-functioning detector, as well as the integration and testing of large sub-sections of the final SCT barrel detector. The paper follows the chronology of the construction. The main steps of the assembly are described with the results of intermediate tests. The barrel service components were developed and fabricated in parallel so that a flow of detector modules, cooling loops, opto-harnesses and Frequency-Scanning-Interferometry (FSI) alignment structures could be assembled onto the four cylinders. Once finished, each cylinder was conveyed to the next site for the mounting of modules to form a complete single barrel. Extensive electrical and thermal function tests were carried out on the completed single barrels. In the next stage, the four single barrels and thermal enclosures were combined into the complete SCT barrel detector so that it could be integrated with the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) barrel to form the central part of the ATLAS inner detector. Finally, the completed SCT barrel was tested together with the TRT barrel in noise tests and using cosmic rays.
