Med semesteret og normal drift i
gang kommer årets første IFT post med stort informasjonsbegjær til din
innboks! Undertegnede har den siste
måneden brukt mye tid på å få de økonomiske ender til å møtes for 2009.
Budsjettforslaget som nå er klart legges frem for instituttrådet på Mandag! Der
vil det også orienteres om årets kanskje viktigste prosess for IFT, nemlig den
nasjonale evalueringen i regi av NFR. Altså - to gode grunner til å delta i
rådsmøtet førstkommende mandag!
Ellers har Bodil Holst et al, Lars
Helseth, Norbert Lummen/Bjørn Kvamme og Pawel Kosinski et al publisert artikler
på slutten av 2008 sammen med om lag 10 partikkelfysikk artikler. Verdensrekorden i forfatterantall nærmer seg

Breaking news: Rydbergatomer
observeres og manipuleres nå eksperimentelt
ved IFT

Rydbergatomer er et atom i høyt eksiterte (metastabil)
tilstander. Et enkelt Rydbergatom kan ha en utstrekning større enn et virus og
er således et eksotisk kvantesystem på grensen til klassisk fysikk. Slike
atomer responderer på elektriske og magnetiske felt og kan gjennom slike
manipuleres kontrollert. Daniel Fregenal et al kan nå produsere slike atomer og
kontrollere dem i IFT laserlaboratorium som eneste sted i Norden. Spekteret
over viser en målt resonans observert i går! Dette kan gi spennende forskning
fremover. Dessverre reiser Daniel nå hjem til Argentina etter 5 måneder i
Bergen, men samarbeidet Bergen-Århus-Argentina vil ventelig fortsette!

Midlertidig ordning
av små driftsmidler fra Norges forskningsråd ( SMÅFORSK )
I statsbudsjettet for 2006 (St prp nr 1 2005-2006) ble det
bevilget 40 mill. kroner til en midlertidig ordning (2006-2010) for tildeling
av små driftsmidler til vitenskapelig ansatte ved universiteter og høyskoler.
Ordningen ble videreført i 2007 og 2008 og fortsetter også i 2009.

Abstract:
We investigate the impact of strongly focused electromagnetic waves in E x E*
media, and relate it to the vectorial magnetization distribution induced by the
Inverse Faraday Effect. Whereas weakly focused waves generate a magnetization
vector along the wave propagation axis, strongly focused waves result in
complex three-dimensional magnetization distributions due to the vectorial
nature of the electromagnetic field. If a two-beam system comprising of a
linearly polarized wave crossing a strongly focused radially polarized Bessel
wave is used, the resulting magnetization distribution is confined to a region
comparable to the wavelength of the electromagnetic wave with the magnetic

Neutral atom and
molecule focusing using a Fresnel zone plate

Abstract:
Focusing of neutral atoms and molecules has several potential applications. The
very first microscopy images using helium as an imaging probe were published
earlier this year. Another possible application is to study the diffusion of
atoms and molecules through materials with high spatial resolution by stepping
a porous or permeable sample across the focused beam. With this application in
mind, the authors present the best resolution transmission images hitherto
achieved with helium atoms (less than 2 mu m) of a thin carbon film with 2 mu m
holes. Furthermore, they present the first experiment using a Fresnel zone
plate to focus neutral molecules. They used a beam of deuterium (D-2) which was
focused down to 15.2 +/- 0.5 mu m. D-2 was chosen because it fits in mass to
the geometry of our system, which is optimized for helium. However, the method
can be extended to hydrogen (H-2) or other molecules by using a suitably
adapted zone plate. In both cases the focus was limited by chromatic
aberrations, caused by the velocity spread of the beams. Finally, they present
calculations exploring the resolution limits for focusing of molecular beams
using Fresnel zone plates. The calculations show that Fresnel focusing down to
170 nm full width at half maximum is possible with presently available
techniques.

Abstract:
This paper presents a numerical model for a planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)
with mixed ionic-electronic conducting electrodes. Transport of positive or
negative charges, which takes place in the direction of down- or up-gradient
electric potential, respectively, within the composite electrodes and through
the electrolyte membrane, is mimicked by making use of an algorithm for Fickian
diffusion in the commercial software. The output cell voltage, which is the
potential difference between the two current collectors, is fixed at a given
value. The coupled equations describing the conservation of mass, momentum and
energy and the chemical and electrochemical processes are solved using the
commercial package Star-CD, augmented with subroutines developed in-house.
Results for the concentration of chemical species and the distributions of
temperature and current density in an anode-supported SOFC with direct internal
reforming are presented and discussed. The potential for using this model as a
general numerical tool to study the impact of the detailed processes taking

Nucleation and growth of FeCl2 in supercritical water at different state points
in the temperature range from 798 to 873 K and system densities between 0.18
and 0.13 g/cm(3) have been studied by molecular dynamics simulations. For the
determination of nucleation rates we employed and compared the method of
Yasuoka and Matsumoto U. Chem. Phys. 109 (1998) 8451-8462] and the mean first passage
time method by Wedekind et al. U. Chem. Phys. 126 (2007) 134103]. While the
method of Yasuoka and Matsumoto could be applied straightforward, the method of
Wedekind et al. needed additional assumptions to be applied successfully on the
studied systems which show very fast nucleation and growth due to a very
low-nucleation barrier. Depending on the applied method, the obtained
nucleation rates vary between The critical cluster sizes as estimated by the
mean first passage time method vary 10(35) and 10(37) m(-3) s(-1). between 12
