Rektorvalg: Studenter og ansatte – still opp i kantinen i dag og neste fredag for å møte UiB sine rektorkandidater:

I dag kl. 13.30 kan du treffe rektorkandidat Rolf Reed i kantinen, og samtidig kan du også få kaffe og en vårrull!  Neste fredag kommer rektor og kandidat for en ny periode Sigmund Grønmo samme sted.  Begge vil fortelle om sitt program og svare på spørsmål fra ansatte og studenter. Dette er din sjanse til å stille konkrete spørsmål og/eller høre hva den som skal være universitets leder de neste fire år vil med oss og gi deg anledning til å gjøre opp en mening før valget!

 

På Høyden fylles i disse dager med leserbrev om valget. IFT posten vil omtale de som har røtter herfra.

 

Fysikkevalueringen

Denne uken har forskningsgruppelederne fått i oppdrag å utarbeide beskrivelser av status og utfordringer for sine respektive forskningsgrupper som skal ligge til grunn for evalueringen. Skrivene skal være ferdig Innen 1. april og jeg oppfordrer alle forskningsgruppemedlemmer til å bidra godt i prosessen. Til alle som skal evalueres er det også gått ut etterspørsel etter CV som også må returneres etter vedlagte mal.  Jeg oppfordrer derfor også hver ”evaluant” til å bruke litt tid på å gjøre CV’en godt oppdatert! CV og forskningsgruppebeskrivelser blir ventelig det viktigste grunnlag for hva evalueringskomiteen vil skrive om oss – noe som igjen vil være svært viktig for fremtiden for instituttet!

 

Vitenskapelige resultater 

Først gratuleres Bjørn Askeland og Halvor Hobek et al med en artikkel som dokumenterer utvikling av en ny (marin) akustisk pulsgenerator.  I det vi også registrerer to partikkelfysikk publikasjoner kan vi notere at internettet feirer 20 års jubileum i år (se f. eks. artikkel i morgenbladet under).  Det har forandret verden – og det startet på CERN!

Publikasjonsresultater for 2008 –

- viser en gledelig oppgang for IFT med 16% til 72.1 poeng (av fakultetets 501 poeng) – vi er kun slått av Informatikk og Biologi – og de driver ikke storskala forskning (som dessverre ikke slår ut i det norske tellekantvanviddet). Konklusjon – 2008 var et produktivt år for IFT –men vi ligger godt bak rekordåret 2005 (101.7 poeng av fakultetets 447.4)

Redelighetsutvalget ved UiB arrangerer seminar i forskningsetikk for veiledere på Solstrand 16. og 17. september 2009.

Seminaret er en oppfølging av sommerkurset på Marsteinen 18.-20. juni 2008.

Veiledere (til primært ph.d.-kandidater) ved universiteter og høgskoler

 

Seminaret deles opp i tre hovedområder:

Bolk 2: Veileder og veileders ansvar

Bolk 3: Doktorgradsarbeider og juks

Sommerskolen i Alpbach i Østerrike arrangeres hvert år av FFG Aeronautics and Space Agency i samarbeid med ESA og nasjonale romorganisasjoner, blant annet Norsk Romsenter. Norsk Romsenter gir stipend til studenter og stipendiater som ønsker å delta på sommerskolen. Årets tema er eksoplaneter. Noen av målene med årets skole er å forstå hvordan og når planetene blir skapt, søket etter jord-liknende planeter med muligheter for liv og jakten etter biologiske spor.

Abstract: The Low-level Acoustic Combustion Source (LACS) which can fire its pulses at a high rate, has been tested successfully as a seismic marine source on shallow ice-age sediments in Byfjorden at Bergen, Norway. Pseudo-Noise pulsed signals with spiky autocorrelation functions were used to detect the sediments. Each transmitted sequence lasted 10 s and contained 43 pulses. While correlation gave a blurry result, deconvolution between the near-field recordings and the streamer recordings gave a clear seismic section. Compared to the section acquired with single air-gun shots along the same profile, the LACS gave a more clear presentation of the sediments and basement. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V.
