Dessuten er uken 5-10. oktober avsatt til de site visits som ikke kan gjennomføres i det første tidsrommet. Focal shifts on focusing through a plane interface

Abstract: We derive explicit formulas for the focal shift, the intensity increase, and the axial zeros obtained on focusing at low Fresnel numbers through a plane interface between two isotropic media, and demonstrate their validity through comparisons with numerical plots of axial intensity distributions. Also, we show that for the special case in which the two isotropic media have the same refractive index, these formulas are in complete agreement with previous results presented for focusing in a single medium. A comprehensive high-throughput analysis of substorms observed by IMAGE magnetometer network: Years 1993-2003 examined

Abstract: The annual and yearly variation of the substorm activity during a complete solar cycle, from year 1993 to year 2003, has been examined. Almost 6000 substorms were identified by an automated search engine. The identification method was found to be robust and applicable to all activity levels. To examine the long-term (annual, yearly, and solar cycle) variability in the substorm occurrence rate, we formed a measure called the substorm number. The substorm number and peak amplitude were found to only weakly follow the Sun's activity measured by a sunspot number. During the years of sunspot maxima in the solar cycle 23, the Northern Hemisphere auroral region was only moderately active. The largest substorm numbers and peak amplitudes were found during the declining solar cycle phases when the interplanetary high-speed streams hit the Earth. We found out that the substorms last longer during the least active season (i.e., summer months) and during the least active years (e. g., 1997 and 2001). Furthermore, the substorm number and peak amplitude show much larger values for winter than for summer, which may be partly due to the fact that the maximum southward component of the interplanetary magnetic field (Bsouth) occurs in February and the minimum occurs in June.

 

Functional Relevance of Interindividual Differences in Temporal Lobe Callosal Pathways: A DTI Tractography Study

Abstract: The midsagittal corpus callosum is topographically organized, that is, with regard to their cortical origin several subtracts can be distinguished within the corpus callosum that belong to specific functional brain networks. Recent diffusion tensor tractography studies have also revealed remarkable interindividual differences in the size and exact localization of these tracts. To examine the functional relevance of interindividual variability in callosal tracts, 17 right-handed male participants underwent structural and diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging. Probabilistic tractography was carried out to identify the callosal subregions that interconnect left and right temporal lobe auditory processing areas, and the midsagittal size of this tract was seen as indicator of the (anatomical) strength of this connection. Auditory information transfer was assessed applying an auditory speech perception task with dichotic presentations of consonant-vowel syllables (e.g., /ba-ga/). The frequency of correct left ear reports in this task served as a functional measure of interhemispheric transfer. Statistical analysis showed that a stronger anatomical connection between the superior temporal lobe areas supports a better information transfer. This specific structure-function association in the auditory modality supports the general notion that interindividual differences in callosal topography possess functional relevance.

den nye norske læreplanen i naturfag øke elevenes lesekompetanse?

Abstract

In the Norwegian curriculum reform, coined ?Kunnskapsløftet?, reading 

is introduced as one of five basic skills to be emphasised in all 

subjects, including science. Due to the presence of science-related 

information and debate in society, competence in reading scientific 

texts should be considered an important aspect of scientific literacy. 

In this article I review literature which indicates that many students 

find it hard to read scientific texts, many science teachers are not 

aware of the importance of teaching students to read in science, and 

reading instruction is not common in school science. I therefore 

present an examination of the emphasis on reading in the new Norwegian 

science curriculum. Based on the analysis I conclude that, contrary to 

the intension in the curriculum reform, reading has not received the 

necessary emphasis to change this picture.

Abstract

This article offers a tool-kit for science teachers? reading 

instruction in science. The tool-kit is based on the importance of 

knowledge of text structures and skilled use of reading strategies for 

reading comprehension. Furthermore, the tool-kit takes into account 

the characteristics of the nature of science and scientific texts. By 

drawing upon insights from research on reading and reading 

instruction, the article directs attention to research which concludes 

that proper instruction increase students? competency in reading 

expository texts with understanding. The article thus concludes that, 

in order to induce a change in school science towards increased focus 

on reading scientific texts, competencies related to reading need to 

be included among the learning goals in the science curriculum.
