DONATIONS FOR THE REVIVAL OF PHYSICS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF L'AQUILA

The earthquake of April 6th 2009 has endangered the possibility to mantain at the University of L'Aquila the cultural function that in over 40 years has allowed the valid education of local Physicists. The situation is very critical not only for the damage produced by the seism to the seat itself of the university and its facilities but also for the difficulties of young people coming to the university to continue their studies in severe uneasiness conditions (without hostels, lecture halls, laboratories, transport).

Only thanks to an effective and focused intervention of our Physicists' Community the redevelopment in L'Aquila of the life of the Physics Department and of the Physics Graduation Course will be possible. A concrete encouragement to the students is needed in order to let them newly believe in a future of professional training in the Department which has had, besides, a key role to enhance synergy with the nearby Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of INFN.

Answering the call of L'Aquila Physicists and of many other eminent Colleagues, the Italian Physical Society has willingly assumed a role of 'centre of reference' to convey aid to the Physics Department and Physics Graduation Course of the University of L'Aquila so as to promote a great effort of encouragement and solidarity.

Abstract: This paper investigates a planar anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with mixed-conducting electrodes. Direct internal methane reforming in the high-temperature cell is included. The numerical model used is three-dimensional, a single computational domain comprising the fuel and air channels and the electrodes-electrolyte assembly. The oxygen ion transport through the electrolyte is mimicked with an algorithm for Fickian diffusion built into the commercial computational package Star-CD. The equations describing transport, chemical and electrochemical processes for mass, momentum, species and energy are solved using Star-CD with in-house developed subroutines. Results for temperature, chemical species and current density distribution for co- and counter-flow configurations are shown and discussed. For co-flow, a sub-cooling effect manifests itself in the methane-rich region near the fuel entrance, while for counter-flow a super-heating effect manifests itself somewhat further downstream, where all the methane is consumed.
