Fra Instituttledelsen

 

Denne uken vil jeg først gratulere Alex Hoffmann, hans studenter og samarbeidspartnere for et spennende arbeid om estimering av grenseflate energi mellom hydrater og forskjellige vesker.  Likeså den svært aktive forsker II i romfysikk Stein Haaland som har publisert et arbeide om plasmadynamikk i magnetosfæren basert på Cluster målinger. Dernest var det flott å se vår utrolig aktive emeritus Erling Hammer i TV 2 i går der han ”avkledde” innhold og virkemåte til et ”kreftkurerende” instrument.   

 

Denne uken er også statsudsjettet lagt frem – hva betyr det for IFT?  Jo, at vi ikke kan vente vekst, snarer tvert i mot! Ingen nye stipendiatstillinger betyr hardere kamp om eksisterende. Ingen nye grep i forhold til grunnleggende virksomhet ved universitetene betyr også at frie prosjekter i NFR vil fortsette med en latterlig avslagsprosent på 90-tallet og at politiske føringer er avgjørende for i hvilken grad man får tilgang på eksperimentelt utstyr. Budsjettet er en fortsatt forskningspolitikk innrettet mot visse tematiske områder fremfor mot et dynamisk komplekst fremtidig kunnskapssamfunn.  Trist – men dessverre ikke overraskende!

Semesterstart våren 2010

Undervisningen våren 2010 vil starte opp 11. januar (uke 2), og ikke i uke 3 når vårsemesteret vanligvis starter. Dette er bestemt på bakgrunn av januar starter med uke 53, og hvis ikke semesterstart flyttes, vil de siste eksamene bli avviklet 18. juni i uke 24. Dette blir for nært opp mot sensurfristen, 30. juni.

 

Dette vil si at:

- Frist for undervisningspåmelding vil være torsdag 7. januar (uke 1)

- HMS-kurs i kjemi vil bli holdt fredag 8. januar (uke 1)

- Undervisningen for de fleste emner på bachelornivå vil starte opp i uke 2 (11. – 15. januar)

Interfacial tension measurement of freon hydrates by droplet deposition and contact angle measurements

Abstract: This paper describes a new experimental method for estimating the interfacial energy between hydrates and a variety of liquids. It is shown to be possible to create a smooth freon-hydrate surface on the interface between an aqueous phase and an oil phase, and to deposit a droplet of another hydrocarbon-based phase on the waterside of that surface. The contact angles of such droplets with the hydrate surfaces have been measured directly, and also estimated using the ADSA-P method, with a number of additives to the oil, the aqueous and the droplet phases. The contact angle measurements are shown to give reproducible results, suitable for estimating the effect of additives on the interfacial energy.

 

Plasma transport in the magnetotail lobes

Abstract: The Earth's magnetosphere is populated by particles originating from the solar wind and the terrestrial ionosphere. A substantial fraction of the plasma from these sources are convected through the magnetotail lobes. In this paper, we present a statistical study of convective plasma transport through the Earth's magnetotail lobes for various geomagnetic conditions. The results are based on a combination of density measurements from the Electric Field and Waves Experiment (EFW) and convection velocities from the Electron Drift Instrument (EDI) on board the Cluster spacecraft. The results show that variations in the plasma flow is primarily attributed to changes in the convection velocity, whereas the plasma density remains fairly constant and shows little correlation with geomagnetic activity. During disturbed conditions there is also an increased abundance of heavier ions, which combined with enhanced convection, cause an accentuation of the mass flow. The convective transport is much slower than the field aligned transport. A substantial amount of plasma therefore escape downtail without ever reaching the central plasma sheet.
