Denne uken har undertegnede deltatt på styringsgruppemøte for CERN forskning i regi av forskningsrådet i Oslo. En evalueringsrapport over prosjektet ble der lagt frem og dette var i all hovedsak positiv omtale av aktiviteten. Dette var hyggelig lesning og danner et godt grunnlag for planlegging av nytt NFR finansiert CERN program for perioden 2012-2019 som vil starte neste år.

Denne uken er det også publisert hele 5 ISI registrerte artikler med IFT forfatterskap: I tillegg til en BABAR artikkel med ~800 forfattere har Joakim Nystrand og kolleger publisert beregninger for fotonrelaterte prosesser i tungionefysikk. Videre har Catalin Ilea og sine veiledere gjort støvdynamikk beregninger som har resultert i nye resultater for mer sammensatte støvpartikkeltyper. Samme gruppe (Pavel Kosinski & Alex Hoffmann) har også beregnet virkningsgrad for SOFC brenselceller med visse katodekonfigurasjoner. Og sist har romfysikk ved Stein Haaland publisert nok en Cluster basert artikkel. Gratulasjoner til alle IFT forfattere!

Del 1 finner sted Kl 10:00 - 15:50 og har hovedtema "Bergen - finn din plass i verdens største forskningsamarbeid". Her blir det fokus på muligheter i EUs forskningsprogrammer både for FoU institusjoner og bedrifter. Gjennom flere innlegg blir det orientering om prosjekttyper og finansiering, stipendiatordninger og infrastruktur, samt strategiske valg.

Videre blir det en rekke ytdypende og spennede innlegg fra ulike bransjer og teknologiområder, som mat, landbruk, fiskeri og bioteknologi, miljø og klima, klimavennlig energi, helseforaskning, IKT og sikkerhet, nanomaterialer og produksjon samt morgendagens sjøtransport.

Revidert pandemiplan

Det vises til pandemiplan som ble sendt instituttene 5. august 2009. På bakgrunn av erfaringer og vurderinger som er gjort siden forrige plan ble utarbeidet, samt utviklingen av influensaen, har universitetdirektøren nå utarbeidet en revidert pandemiplan. Denne er lagt ut på intranett.

Undervisningen våren 2010 vil starte opp 11. januar (uke 2), og ikke i uke 3 når vårsemesteret vanligvis starter. Dette er bestemt på bakgrunn av januar starter med uke 53, og hvis ikke semesterstart flyttes, vil de siste eksamene bli avviklet 18. juni i uke 24. Dette blir for nært opp mot sensurfristen, 30. juni.

Dette vil si at:

- Frist for undervisningspåmelding vil være torsdag 7. januar (uke 1)

- HMS-kurs i kjemi vil bli holdt fredag 8. januar (uke 1)

- Undervisningen for de fleste emner på bachelornivå vil starte opp i uke 2 (11. – 15. januar)

- Eksamen vil være i uke 21, 22 og 23 (25. mai – 11. juni)

Two-photon interactions with nuclear breakup in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Abstract: Highly charged relativistic heavy ions have high cross sections for two-photon interactions. The photon flux is high enough that two-photon interactions may be accompanied by additional photonuclear interactions. Except for the shared impact parameter, these interactions are independent. Additional interactions like mutual Coulomb excitation are of experimental interest, because the neutrons from the nuclear dissociation provide a simple, relatively unbiased trigger. We calculate the cross sections, rapidity, mass, and transverse momentum (p(T)) distributions for exclusive gamma gamma production of mesons and lepton pairs and for gamma gamma reactions accompanied by mutual Coulomb dissociation. The cross sections for gamma gamma interactions accompanied by multiple neutron emission (XnXn) and single-neutron emission (1n1n) are about 1/10 and 1/100 of that for the unaccompanied gamma gamma interactions. We discuss the accuracy with which these cross sections may be calculated. The typical p(T) of gamma gamma final states is several times smaller than for comparable coherent photonuclear interactions, so p(T) may be an effective tool for separating the two classes of interactions.

Abstract: Knowledge-based modeling of dust lifting behind shock waves is a prerequisite for realistic simulation of dust explosions. Mostly numerical simulations of this process focus on dusts consisting of monodisperse particles, while real dusts are polydisperse. This article investigates the effect on the lifting process of the dust being polydisperse with a log-normal distribution of particle sizes. The spatial distribution of the various sizes in the rising layer is studied, and statistical results for the rise, the collision frequency and the particle kinetic energy are compared for polydisperse and monodisperse dusts. It is shown that a layer consisting of polydisperse particles rises significantly faster than a one consisting of monodisperse particles, all other parameters being the same.

Modeling of transport, chemical and electrochemical phenomena in a cathode-supported SOFC

Abstract: This paper investigates the performance of a planar cathode-supported solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with composite electrodes using a detailed numerical model. The methane reforming reaction is included in the model and takes place mostly in the porous, thin anode at the high operating temperature of 800-1000 degrees C. A single computational domain comprises the fuel and air channels and the electrodes-electrolyte assembly eliminating the need for internal boundary conditions. The equations governing transport and chemical and electrochemical processes for mass, momentum, chemical and charged species and energy are solved using Star-CD augmented by subroutines written in-house. The operating cell voltage is determined by the potential difference between the cathode and the anode, whose potentials are fixed. Results of temperature, chemical species, current density and electric potential distribution for a co-flow configuration are shown and discussed. It is found that the sub-cooling effect observed in anode-supported cells is almost ameliorated, making the cathode-supported cell favorable from the viewpoint of material stability.

Separatrix regions of magnetic reconnection at the magnetopause

Abstract: Using data from the four Cluster spacecraft we study the separatrix regions of magnetic reconnection sites at the dayside magnetopause under conditions when reconnection is occurring in the magnetopause current layer which separates magnetosheath plasma from the hot magnetospheric plasma sheet. We define the separatrix region as the region between the separatrix - the first field line opened by reconnection - and the reconnection jet (outflow region). We analyze eight separatrix region crossings on the magnetospheric side of the magnetopause and present detailed data for two of the events. We show that characteristic widths of the separatrix regions are of the order of ten ion inertial lengths at the magnetopause. Narrow separatrix regions with widths comparable to a few ion inertial lengths are rare. We show that inside the separatrix region there is a density cavity which sometimes has complex internal structure with multiple density dips. Strong electric fields exist inside the separatrix regions and the electric potential drop across the regions can be up to several kV. On the magnetosheath side of the region there is a density gradient with strong field aligned currents. The observed strong electric fields and currents inside the separatrix region can be important for a local energization of ions and electrons, particularly of ionospheric origin, as well as for magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling.
