IFT POSTEN – 18.06.2010

A Word from the Department Head

The number of applicants to our master programmes in the autumn 2010 had been presented in the previous issue of IFT-posten. There are 35 applicants for the master in physics, and IFT’s share of applicants in process and petroleum technology amounts to approximately 65. This altogether makes up a total of approximately 25% applications in relation to all other faculties. This is not far from the 2009 statistics, when the number of finished candidates at the Department of Physics and Technology amounted to 55 of 217. Our department can really be proud of these numbers, particularly in relation to the society’s increasing demand for master-candidates within our subject areas. This large number of applicants is at the same time a big challenge when it comes to the supervisor capacities in certain study areas. Even with the external examiners who are doing an excellent job in helping us out, it is still impossible to secure study places for all of our applicants. Furthermore, this in turn challenges the supervision capacities for PhD students. This is a wake-up call we need to take into consideration when developing our strategic plan, particularly since the last point brings higher income to the department.

This is the last issue of IFT-posten for this semester, and I would like to wish all the employees, students and readers of IFT-posten, a really great summer!

Best regards
Geir Anton

Staff

It is our pleasure to inform you that our amazing economy colleague and co-worker Solfrid Sture has accepted the position as the leader of the economy section at the Department of Biology, and will therefore quit working for the Department of Physics and Technology as of 31. August 2010. For Solfrid this will bring new and exciting challenges – and on our part we can only take a bow and congratulate her! We will come with more praise and an even warmer goodbye as the date of her leave approaches.
