Semesteret er godt i gang, instituttledelsen løper igjen mellom møtene men har beviselig også satt av tid til nok et meldingsblad med informasjon om hendelser, søknadsmuligheter og frister, denne gang nok en fridafrist! Belønningsmidler for mastergrader på annum forutsetter også at veileder ser til at avhandlingen er registrert innen 20. januar!

 

Det noteres 3 BABAR artikler og 4 konferanseartikler som omhandler et felles tema ”spinn” fra helt forskjellig teoretisk utgangspunkt, kvantemekanisk (Per Osland et al.) og klassisk (Pavel Kosinski et al).

Under siste året på videregående deltok jeg i norsk finale i kjemi- og fysikkol.
I Mexico i fjor sommer fikk jeg bronsemedalje i fysikkolympiaden, og har lyst å dele opplevelsene mine fra turen med dere. Hvordan jeg er blitt interessert i fysikk og veien til fysikkolympiaden kommer jeg også til å snakke om.

 

FELLESSEMINAR 2010 (Planlagt omdøpt til Instituttkollokvium)

Fellesseminarene vil inneværende år bli organisert av en komite  bestående av Per Osland (leder), Jan Petter Hansen og  Velaug Myrseth Oltedal. Vi har allerede noen konkrete ideer, har et  beskjedent budsjett, og ber herved om forslag på personer som dere  gjerne ville høre. Det gjelder spesielt de som kommer hit i annet ærend, og som kunne gi et instituttkollokvium av generell interesse.

 

 

Endre Lillethun – æresdoktor!

Tidligere professor ved Fysisk institutt, Endre LillethunEr utnevnt til æresdoktor ved Universitetet i Makere, Uganda. Hans kone Karen Lillethun reiste Onsdag denne uken til Uganda for å være til stede ved sermonien i den anledning. Hun har lovet å komme tilbake både med bilder og fyldig rapport om hendelsen.

Høyere utdanningsinstitusjoner har tradisjonelt betraktet det som en oppgave å utvikle evnen til kritisk refleksjon, innsikt i vitenskapelig tenkemåte og erkjennelseslære og fordypning samt å utvikle såvel saklighetskompetanse som etisk kompetanse. Lærestedenes formål har ikke bare vært å tilby studentene en fagutdannelse, men også å sikre studentene allmenndannelse som menneske, i tråd med et klassisk humboldtsk dannelsesideal. Slik dannelse tar tid, og reformene av høyere utdanning det siste tiåret har satt det humboldtske dannelsesideal på prøve. Mange utdanninger har blitt kortere og har fått et sterkere fokus på spesifikt og teknisk faginnhold.

 

Norwegian Center for Geothermal Energy Research

Siden "Norwegian Center for Geothermal Energy Research" (CGER) ble  etablert for nær et år siden, har geotermisk energi i Norge blitt mer  fremtredende både på forskning- og industrisiden. Dette er takket være  god innsats fra flere av partnerne. Spesielt kan vi gratulere NORSAR  og Statoil med oppstart av GEISER-prosjektet som fikk tilsagn om EU 

FP7 finansiering i høst. Dette prosjektet skal bidra til bedre  forståelse og forbedring av konstruerte geotermiske system (Enhanced  Geothermal Systems/EGS) med å undersøke indusert seismisitet. Prosjekt  POGE (Assessing the potential for deep goethermal energy) på 

modellering og simulering av geotermiske systen startet i høst med UiB  og PGP som forskningspartnere, og finansiering fra NFR og Statoil. På  industrisiden er Kongsbergindustrien igang med prosjekt GEOKON, som  tar sikte på å etablere en industribedrift for tekniske løsninger for  geotemisk kraftproduksjon. Rock Energy fikk i høst tilsagn om 28 mill  kroner fra ENOVA til et pilotanlegg for dypgeotermisk varmeproduksjon. 

Videre har Statoil annonsert en styrking av sin satsning på geotermisk  energi.

beslutningstakere i medlemslandene. Foredraget inneholder noen betraktninger omkring IPCCs
viktige rolle og engasjement både vitenskaplig og politisk, og om vitenskapsetiske utfordringer
som følger av det. Et viktig anliggende både med hensyn til politiske beslutninger og
kommunikasjon er hvordan man skal håndtere usikker kunnskap

The Chair will fund stays of researchers from Spain, into research centers in Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, and from these countries into Spanish research institutions, with the aim to improve and to deepen the academic and research international cooperation between involved countries.

Internasjonal dag ved MN fakultetet – Realfagbygget onsdag 20. januar.

Dette er en del av UiB sin Internasjonale uke. Fokuse denne dagen er rettet mot delstudier i utlandet og søknadsprosessen i forhold til dette. Vi legger opp til et tett program med presentasjoner av utveksling til ulike områder av verden og studentpresentasjoner fra studenter som allerede har vært ute og reist. I tillegg arrangerer vi "Søknadsverksted" hvor studentene skal få svar på alt de lurer på i forbindelse med et utenlandsopphold. Vi kommer også til å ha et vrimleareal med både norsker og internasjonale studenter på stands som kan svare på spørsmål om hvordan det er å være student i ulike deler av verden.

 

Hovedmålgruppen for arrangementet er andre- og fjerdesemesterstudenter, men også andre studenter vil finne inspirasjon til å ta deler av studiet sitt i utlandet

Abstract: Using as basic observable an angular-integrated asymmetry to be measured in Drell-Yan lepton-pair production at the LHC, we discuss the identification reach on the spin-2 of the lowest-lying Randall-Sundrum resonance predicted by gravity in one warped extra dimension, against the spin-1 and spin-0 hypotheses. Numerical results indicate that, depending on the graviton coupling strength to the standard model particles, such a spin-2 identification can extend up to mass scales of 1.0-1.6 TeV and 2.4-3.2 TeV for LHC integrated luminosities of 10 and 100 fb(-1), respectively.

 

Modelling and Simulation of Explosion Suppression by a Cloud of Particles

Abstract: In this paper we revisit the known problem of the explosion suppression by a cloud of inert and solid particles. This issue has been so far investigated experimentally where the most important task has been to find the proper suppressant, estimate its quantity, as well as design the quenching device. Also some attention has been paid to numerical investigation where by use of computer simulation the same questions have been asked. In this paper we also focus on the numerical study, where the first moment of the suppressing process is analysed: the exact behaviour of the particle cloud as it reacts with the gas. A mathematical model is presented that bases on the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach for the description of the both phases: solid and gas. Finally some results are shown: both snapshots of particle location as well statistics.

Abstract: The interaction of a vortex and a jet plays an important role for many industrial processes such as Carbon Black formation or combustion in diesel engines. The knowledge of physics of these phenomena is crucial for engineers, but also for scientists who wish to reveal many interesting and complex issues hidden there. In this research, we numerically investigate cases where a cylindrical reactor is charged with gas injected through five ports. The first one is located along the main axis of the cylinder and this leads to the formation of the main jet. The other four ports are situated along the side walls such that the gas entering the cylinder tangentially through them causes a vortex to be formed. The objective of this paper is to show the fundamental physical phenomena and also how the initial and boundary conditions influence the results. Our most important observation at this stage is that the mixing process is more intense if the vortex is inclined towards x-axis. The results are mainly shown as snapshots of gas velocity.

Abstract: Different CFD models of reverse-flow centrifugal separators, specifically swirl tubes, have been built in order to study and analyse in detail the phenomenon of the "end of the vortex". The present numerical work is based on-and compared with-previous experimental studies of this phenomenon. The numerical models were built in complete agreement with the geometrical configurations and operating conditions used in these earlier experimental studies [1, 2]. Two different types of swirl tubes were analyzed. One type was an in principle long tube with variable length in which the dependence on the vessel length of the behavior of the vortex core in a simple, well-defined geometry was studied. The other type was equipped with a wide "dust collection vessel" at the bottom, the depth of which was varied, to study the behaviour of the vortex core in a widely-used geometry. 3-D LES simulations were carried out using the commercial CFD package Star-CD. The bending of the vortex core to the wall of the vessel and its precessional motion, constituting the phenomenon of the end of the vortex, was seen in both types of geometries, and the obtained results are in very good agreement, both qualitatively and to an extent quantitatively, with previous experimental results [2].
