publiserer innen klimaforskning har talerett (før de paradoksalt nok fortsetter

fagdag på Fløien 19. mars
39 personer deltok på
heldagsarrangementet på Fløien 19. mars. Dagen startet med Professor Kari
Fladmark fra Molekylærbiologisk institutt som foreleste om Vancouver
konvensjonen og hennes erfaringer med publiseringsetikk tilknyttet dette.
Deretter holdt vår egen Ingjald Pilskog et innlegg om PhD studiet og veiledning
sett fra studentståsted. Gry Kibsgaard fra forskningsavdelingen avsluttet med å
fortelle om hvilke regler, krav og forventninger som eksisterer i UiB systemet
i forhold til PhD veiledning. Alt i alt fikk vi belyst PhD studiet og de
forskjellige roller tilknyttet dette på en god måte med mange innspill fra
salen.
Etter lunch holdt påtroppende
instituttleder Geir Anton Johansen en glimrende ”første tale” til instituttet.
Den gav bud om en ny og spennende tid! Dagen ble avsluttet med et interessant
foredrag om lydspredning under vann og hvordan det kan brukes til å overvåke
sildestimer – av Dr. Ken Foote. Undertegnede ble her overrasket over å se den
kjente formelen for Coulomb spredning dukke opp i en helt ny sammenheng. Neppe
tilfeldig!

FORSKINGSFOND VESTLANDET - Søknadsfrist

Regionale forskingsfond er ei ny satsing frå 2010 som skal
styrke utvikling og innovasjon på Vestlandet ved å stø opp under regionalt
prioriterte forskingstema. Rogaland, Hordaland og Sogn og Fjordane
fylkeskommune er saman om fondet. Ei felles fylkestingssak hausten 2009
bestemte viktige forskingstema. Desse er lagt til grunn for styret sitt arbeid
med handlingsplan og utlysing av midlar. Ordninga med regionale forskingsfond
vert utvikla i nært samarbeid med Noregs forskingsråd. Regionalt forskingsfond Vestlandet planlegg ei
første utlysing 21. april 2010 med søknadsfrist 2. juni 2010. Søknadene vil bli
behandla i styremøte 28. september 2010.

Abstract:
We present a detailed analysis of the interference effects observed for
ionization in collisions of fast highly charged projectiles with molecular
hydrogen. We propose a nonperturbative semiclassical approach to describe the
process under consideration by solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation
fully numerically on a 3D spatial grid. We present results for Kr34+-H-2
collisions at 63 MeV/u impact energy and discuss different structures observed
experimentally in doubly differential cross sections. The presence of Young-type
minima and the absence of high-frequency oscillations are especially addressed.
We also report unexpected interference patterns which can be observed for
fixed-in-space molecular targets.

Abstract: A
set of hydrate slurry now experiments has been conducted in a laboratory scale
low-pressure flow loop. The dependence of turbulent slurry flow on the hydrate
volume fraction has been studied. The Slurry is shown to behave as a
non-Newtonian fluid and the apparent viscosity is determined as a function of
the concentration of hydrate particles. The hydrate suspension was observed to
exhibit a yield stress. Flow samples were taken to quantify hydrate particle
parameters by microscopy: mean particle diameter and standard deviation, the
particle sphericity and the voidage of beds formed by the particles.
Voxel-specific
brain arterial input functions from dynamic susceptibility contrast MRI and
blind deconvolution in a group of healthy males

Abstract:
Purpose: To investigate in a healthy population (n=44) the properties of
voxel-specific arterial input functions that were obtained using a recently
published blind estimation approach.
Material
and Methods: The voxel-specific arterial input functions were qualitatively and
quantitatively assessed, through visual inspection or by comparing time-to-peak
(delays) and peak amplitude (dispersion) values between eight regions of the
brain. Furthermore, they were compared to arterial input functions selected
manually in the middle cerebral artery (MCA), where normally no delay or
dispersion of the contrast agent was expected.
Results:
The estimated voxel-specific arterial input functions varied between brain
regions. Differences in delays and dispersion were larger within one brain
region among all participants than between regions in one participant. A good
correlation was typically found between the estimated voxel-specific arterial
input functions and the manually selected arterial input functions in the MCA
region.
Conclusion:
Given knowledge of neurovascular anatomy, the current blind approach seemingly
produced reasonable estimates of voxel-specific arterial input functions. In
addition to potentially reducing quantification errors in DSC-MRI, these
user-independent voxel-specific arterial input functions could be useful for
visualizing abnormal blood supply patterns in patients.

CERN pilot CLOUD experiment

Abstract:
During a 4-week run in October-November 2006, a pilot experiment was performed
at the CERN Proton Synchrotron in preparation for the Cosmics Leaving OUtdoor
Droplets (CLOUD) experiment, whose aim is to study the possible influence of
cosmic rays on clouds. The purpose of the pilot experiment was firstly to carry
out exploratory measurements of the effect of ionising particle radiation on
aerosol formation from trace H2SO4 vapour and secondly to provide technical
input for the CLOUD design. A total of 44 nucleation bursts were produced and
recorded, with formation rates of particles above the 3 nm detection threshold
of between 0.1 and 100 cm(-3) s(-1), and growth rates between 2 and 37 nm
h(-1). The corresponding H2SO4 concentrations were typically around 10(6)
cm(-3) or less. The experimentally-measured formation rates and H2SO4
concentrations are comparable to those found in the atmosphere, supporting the
idea that sulphuric acid is involved in the nucleation of atmospheric aerosols.
However, sulphuric acid alone is not able to explain the observed rapid growth
rates, which suggests the presence of additional trace vapours in the aerosol
chamber, whose identity is unknown. By analysing the charged fraction, a few of
the aerosol bursts appear to have a contribution from ion-induced nucleation
and ion-ion recombination to form neutral clusters. Some indications were also
found for the accelerator beam timing and intensity to influence the aerosol
particle formation rate at the highest experimental SO2 concentrations of 6
ppb, although none was found at lower concentrations. Overall, the exploratory
measurements provide suggestive evidence for ion-induced nucleation or ion-ion
recombination as sources of aerosol particles. However in order to quantify the
conditions under which ion processes become significant, improvements are
needed in controlling the experimental variables and in the reproducibility of
the experiments. Finally, concerning technical aspects, the most important lessons
for the CLOUD design include the stringent requirement of internal cleanliness
of the aerosol chamber, as well as maintenance of extremely stable temperatures
(variations below 0.1 degrees C).
