This week
we would like to congratulate Nikolai Østgaard who learned this summer that his application to the Advanced Investigator Grant with his work Terrestrial Gamma Flashes - the Most Energetic Photon Phenomenon in our
Atmosphere had passed the first round in ERC's evaluation process! We are
all waiting in suspense for the results of the second round.
Today's open seminar
Researcher
Mark van Zuilen, Department of geo-science/Center for geo-biology, UoB:
In situ analysis methods for tracking early life
Morphological
identification of microfossils in the metamorphosed early Earth rock record has
been highly controversial. Structural, chemical and isotopic characterization
of small scale objects in polished rock slabs such as mineral assemblages,
microlaminae, and organic microstructures is therefore of crucial importance in
reconstructing the earliest evolution of life.
Several of these in-situ analytical techniques will be discussed, with
emphasis on Raman spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS,
NanoSIMS).
