2 years
have now passed since the opening of the PET-center at the Haukeland University
Hospital. During the planning of the center, it was emphasized that the PET
scanner was to be used for research in other field than medicine and biology.
Prof. Alex Hoffmann at IFT was the first one to use this possibility and is now
able to present the first results he obtained.
In two
projects, the PET scanner is used in a special mode called PEPT (Positron
emission particle tracking) in order to track particles that propagate within
processes. The aim is to establish a better understanding of these processes
which could then be improved through design of the related equipment. This video animation shows a particle (in an
exaggerated size), marked with the positron emitting isotope F-18, propagating
through a cyclone separator. The entire sequence takes only about 3 seconds in
real time. These preliminary results have already uncovered several interesting
and partially unexpected conditions. M.Sc. student ystein Lee Aasen has just
presented his thesis within this project in which in addition to Alex, PhD
student Yu-Fen Chang and
researcher Catalin Ilea are also
engaged. The project is continuing in co-operation with Aker Solutions.
There are
certainly others here at the department who could utilize the PET scanner for
their research!
Travel log from Argentina
Professor colleague and the previous
head of department Jan Petter Hansen is now enjoying his sabbatical leave at
the Centro Atomico Bariloche –
Argentinas sister institute with Norways Institute for Energy Technology.

entire travel log here –
Those of
you who are on sabbatical leave should pay attention to the final lines in Jan
Petters log: . a challenge for others on research exile; to send few lines about
their experiences to IFT-posten ..
The candidates for
the vacant space physics position will presenting their research
All four
candidates selected by the committee are called to interviews where they will
also have a trial lecture and present their research activities. The
presentations of research activities are open for everyone according to the
following plan in the periodical room:
