Dividing offices?
At the
Department of Physics and Technology we are gradually becoming more crowded, today
there are over 250 people at the department! This number, however, does not
include the great number of B.Sc. students at the department who do not have
their own reading rooms. This is a positive development and is an indication of
vitality and strength, but at the same time leading to challenges with respect
to offices and reading rooms. There is a need for more than 10 new offices in
the following months.
We are
paying an annual rent of almost 7 mill NOK for our areas (except classrooms). The
annual square meter price is ca. 1700 NOK* and this spreads onto one- and two
axis rooms (2 and 4 windows) as 20 and 40 NOK annually, respectively. For many
years we have been merging laboratory areas, converting old laboratory areas
and similar, to reading rooms and offices for M.Sc. and PhD students. The next
action we will have to take into consideration is to divide most of our 33 two
axis offices (professor offices) into two, but keep a few in every floor for smaller
meetings and similar.
The case is
that the rent will in a relatively short time be so high that we will manage to
use what we manage to save on condensation and especially on avoiding to pay extra when our need for
extra space is increasing, on other important items at the department. Also,
when the fact that offices rented to externally financed positions provide
income is taken into account, the gain obtained through condensation will be
even greater. I am aware of the fact that many of you will not welcome this,
but it is definitely a thought we all should get used to and discuss.
* In this
square meter price, the spaces of the corridors, toilets etc. are included in
the floor space by multiplying this with a factor of 1,77.
This years wage settlement is completed
On Wednesday we received the result from the local wage negotiations which means that this years wage settlement is completed. At the Department of Physics and Technology, this aroused joy for 16 colleagues, but also disappointment for many others just like every time the wage negotiations take place. Then it is important remember that this type of reward for good work and efforts will be valid for many years at a time! Otherwise see the bulletin in P Hyden.

Department is ready to answer your questions.
Workshop for applicants
The deadline for Marie Curie
Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) is on December 7 2010 and in
connection with this the Norwegian Research Council will be arranging a
workshop on November 8. The purpose of this meeting is to contribute to general
knowledge about the scheme, and mainly to give applicants insight in to an
evaluators standpoint during evaluation of Marie Curie IAPP-applications. This
will hopefully give the applicants a possibility to improve their applications
in the course of the month before the deadline, so that the project proposal
can be found worthy of support.
Information on IAPP, the workshop,
contact persons and registration details can be found here.
Education Quality Seminar
The Education Department is
arranging an annual education quality seminar on December 1. This time, the
theme is Evaluations – What is
good evaluation design? Implementation,
follow-up and publication. The
target group consists of educational leaders, program coordinators, subject and
program responsibles, teaching staff, students, committees and educational
administration. More information about program and registration.
