Department based
strategic project Many of
you can finally relax after completing the Norwegian Research Council
applications last week. From IFT there are 4 applications out of 23 from UoB for the first round of SFF. However,
some of you will again have to get started with hard work: the Norwegian
Research Council has now announced the Department based strategic project with application deadline August
31. As announced earlier, we have identified three areas at our department
which will now have to start the application process: á Space physics á Theoretical particle physics
The group
leaders of these three research groups (Space physics, Subatomic physics, Optics
and atomic physics) are responsible for starting the work in cooperation with
the head of department. |
The Eurasia-program – announcement of scholarships Through the Eurasia-program, it is
possible to apply for scholarships at Bachelor, Master and PhD level for
those students from the countries within the Eurasia-program (Armenia,
Azerbaijan, Georgia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan,
Turkmenistan and Ukraine). It is possible to apply for scholarships for certain study periods
(minimum 3 months to 2 semesters) in the period of fall 2011 - fall 2014, and
for scholarships for full M.Sc. degree, studies starting from fall 2012 or spring
2013. This arrangement aims at
increasing the academic collaboration and contact between Norway and the participating
countries in Eurasia. The program can be used to establish new agreements and
extend the contact network within the participating countries. In the
application, existing or planned agreements with those educational
institutions, from which the students will be recruited, must be presented. All applications from UoB must go through SIUÕs electronic application system within 01.09.11. Departments which are interested in applying for such scholarships must submit relevant information to the coordinator of Eurasia-program at UoB, Kjersti Hvidsten, within 12.08.11. She can also be contacted in connection with questions about the program. For further information, see SIUÕs pages. |
Update on the smell which has been in the
south and middle buildings Arvid Arnesen, building operation responsible region 3, reports
that on last Friday, 3.6.2011, a dense wall was
mounted between the part of the ventilation chamber where the exhaust fan is
installed and the rest of the chamber. We hope and believe that this will
solve the odor problems we have had in these buildings. However, we would
like you to give a quick feedback to Gjert, if this is not the case. We have not yet
received any further reports on the presence of sulfur odor after the last
weekend. |
NTVA Technology forum The Norwegian Technical Science
Academy, NTVA, will arrange NTVA Technology forum in Trondheim on Thursday,
September 8 2011. The topic of this forum is "Innovation and technical research" with emphasis on the role
of the universities. The registration deadline is Friday September 2 –more
information can be found here. |

New Postdoc at the department (010611) Dr. Guo Xiaodong received his MasterÕs degree from College of Science at Shanghai
University, and obtained his Ph. D. from the State Key Laboratory of High
Field Laser Physics, Shanghai Institute of Optics and fine Mechanics, CAS. His
work mainly focused on micro- and nano processing
of materials by ultra-short pulsed lasers. At IFT he will work with Professor
Lars Egil Helseth. Welcome

New Postdoc at the department (010611) Dr. Natalia Arteaga
Marrero received
her Master«s degree in Applied Physics at the University of La Laguna (Spain)
and obtained her Ph.D. in engineering at the Department of Nuclear Physics, Lunds Tekniska Hšgskola, Lund University. Her work has been focused in
single-proton irradiation of living cells, developing software for cell
recognition and fabricating SU-8 devices by UV lithography. Her research
project at UiB will be dedicated to molecular
imaging of cancer using dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging
(DCE-MRI) in collaboration with Dean Dag Rune Olsen. Welcome
to the Department of Physics and Techology Natalia! |

New Professor at the department (010611) Kjellmar Oksavik has a M.Sc. and a PhD degree from UoB. He has worked at the University of Oslo, Johns
Hopkins University in USA and was a Professor at UNIS on Svalbard prior to
his employment at UoB. His research interests are
experimental space physics, with emphasis on radar and satellite measurements.
He has had a central role both as an initiator and a project leader in
several major research projects at UNIS. Welcome
back to the department Kjellmar! |
