A Word from Department Administration

”Responsibility for one’s own learning” has been a frequently used phrase over the last few years and was, among other things, the central part of Reform 94. One of department’s master students told me recently that it had been the same for him and his fellow students. They have in fact concluded that their experience as masterstudents was that they took ”responsibility for each other’s learning”. They each contributed with their own respective competences to each other and concluded that this was both a more effective and a very pleasant way to achieve the goals than just being occupied by their own welfare. This is also well in accord with the academic practices where we share our findings with colleagues from all around the world via publications, and personally enjoy the privilege of reading their respective results.

With a request to adopt the motto ”responsibility for each other’s learning”, on behalf of the entire department, I wish all new bachelor and master students a warm welcome to the Department of Physics and Technology.

News and general information

We would like to congratulate Thomas Gjesteland!

Thomas Gjesteland won the prestigeous prize during the URSI-meeting in Istanbul last week. URSI is an international organisation for radio science and holds international meetings every three years. This year there were 1100 participants and 1300 works presented at the meeting. URSI encourages younger researchers and students via their own studentcompetition where the 10 finalists are picked out following a thorough process for presenting their contribution. Thomas won the fourth prize, and this is considered in the international environment as a very big achievement. In this competition, one is competing with students from all of the big universities all around the world. Both Thomas and his supervisor received numerous congratulations from colleagues all around the world. We join in with our words of praise!

Institutional guidelines for crediting scientific publications

University and College Council in cooperation with the Research Departmets’ common arena (FFA) and the Norwegian coordinating organ for health-related research (NSG) has developed the institutional guidelines for crediting scientific publications.

The main rule is that one doctoral candidate must line up both the degree giving and the cooperating institutions publications to be included in the thesis. This assumes that both parts have in fact contributed with supervising the candidate’s publications. The guidelines thus imply the common responsibility in supervising the candidate’s PhD education.

Reconstruction of outdoor areas around Realfag building

Over the next three years, the ourdoor areas around Realfag building will unergo a process of reconstruction. The reconstruction will take place from 1. September 2011 - 30. November 2013 with breaks during the exam periods in June and December, as well as during the winter period (January-April).

The first part will be reconstructed during the period of 1. September - 30. November 2011. During this period, the southern area towards Bjørn Trumpys house will be cordoned off, the entrance in the southern end of Realfag building will also be closed. There will be an open passage along the ramp between the buildings.

CERN’s CLOUD experiment provides unprecedented insight into cloud formation

CERN issued a press release on outstanding results with the CLOUD-experiment in which Professor Emeritus Egil Lillestøl had also b een very active. The news have to do with sulfuric acid, ammonia and cosmic radiation’s role in atmospheric crystallizing or collecting of aerosols (airborne particles) which influence earth’s climate via a variety of mechanisms. Available position of director at UNIS

Gunnar Sand will quit his position as director at UNIS on Svalbard and the position is now announced, see stillingsomtalen. Application deadline is 15. September.

New colleague

Jesper Gjerloev had his first working day in Space Physics Group on August 1. He holds a master degree from the University of Copenhagen from 1994, and PhD in space physics from DTU from 1997. He has had several research positions both in Danmark and USA, and has since 2003 been appointed senior researcher at John Hopkins University – Applied Physics Laboratory. Jesper’s research is directed towards power systems in the magnetosphere, coupling between this and the ionosphere, substorms and the conjugated phenomena. He has also been involved in both rocket-satellite experiments and also the initiator and leader of a worldwide network of magnetographers. Welcome to the Department of Physics and Technology, Jesper!
