A Word from Department Administration

I would like to encourage you all this Friday to read yesterdayÕs fantastic article in Bergens Tidende – written by one of the Bachelor students in physics, Thea K. rrestad, check out the link below. Something to think about for both physicists and other natural scientists!

Have a great weekend

  • Egil Lillest¿l: Energy for the future

In the later years, he had been focusing on global energy issues and a possible solution to the global energy problems in the form of an accelerator-driven nuclear reactor based on Thorium. This involvement has led to much debate and media coverage for Lillest¿l, with heavy discussions pro et contra possibilities for nuclear power in Norway. More information internally at Mi side.

SIU-conference on Education and Work Life: : The Values of International Cooperation

SIU invites you to a conference in Oslo on 10. November 2011 on work marketÕs competence requirements, the possible responses from the educational systems – and in what ways the informatization may contribute to an increased and improved cooperation between educational institutions and the work life.

Conference on Research University and the global challenges

á      Time: 29. November 2011, from 09:00 – 15:30

á      Place: Egget in Student Centre of the UoB

Would you like to join us in the discussion on future global challenges and how we should overcome these with new knowledge? In connection with this year being the Year of Knowledge, the University of Bergen, in cooperation with Education and Knowledge Ministry, invites you to the national conference on the role of basic research in our continually more globalized world.

The conference perspectives are: "The importance of free basic science in meeting the global challenges – how can Norway become a pioneering country in providing good conditions for free and basic science?"

Conference will be opened by the Research and Higher Education Minister, Tora Aasland, and there will otherwise be lectures by the leading national and international researchers, including Geoffrey Boulton and Merle Jacob among others.

The conference will present good examples of basic research which played an important role in meeting and overcoming the global challenges. In addition, the participants, contributors and a self-elected panel be invited to draft a proposal on what the universities should and can contribute with the new science in the creation of our common future.

More information on programme, registration and Year of Knowledge.

Another jubilee in the field of nuclear physics

This time we are happy to wish Professor emeritus and former rector of UoB, Arnfinn Graue all the best for his 85th birthday which he celebrated on October 1!
