Report from the annual mini-winter school at CERN

This year’s annual mini-winter school at CERN gathered 15 students from the University of Bergen (attending the PHYS115) course and 5 students from the University of Oslo. The school lasted for three days and included a great selection of lectures and visits to the actual experiments. Among others, we had Johannes Wessels (spokesman for ALICE), Peter Jenni (former spokesman for ATLAS) and John Ellis (theorist at King's College London) as lecturers. The visits to the experiments covered a great range of research projects taking place at CERN: ATLAS (high-energy particle physics), ALICE (high-energy nuclear physics), AD (anti-matter research) and the control room of the AMS (anti-matter experiment placed at an international space station). In addition there was also an organized tour of the IT department and inside the LHC control room.
