Fra instituttleder

”Ansvar for egen læring” har vært et mye brukt begrep de siste årene og var blant annet sentralt i Reform 94. En av instituttets masterstudenter fortalte meg for litt siden at det slett ikke var slik han opplevde situasjonen for seg selv og sine medstudenter. De hadde komt fremt til at deres erfaring som masterstudenter var at de tok ”ansvar for hverandres læring”. De bidro hver enkelt med sin kompetanse til hverandre og konkluderte med at dette var både en mer effektiv og hyggelig måte å nå målene på enn å bare være opptatt av eget ve og vel. Det er også helt i tråd med akademisk praksis der vi deler våre funn gjennom publikasjoner med kolleger verden over, og selv nyter god av å lese deres resultater.

Med en oppfordring om å adoptere mottoet ”ansvar for hverandres læring” ønsker jeg på vegne av hele instituttet alle nye bachelor og masterstudenter hjertelig velkomne til Institutt for fysikk og teknologi.

Nyheter og generell informasjon

Gratulerer til Thomas Gjesteland! Bildet er fra utdelingen av prisen under banketten på møtet. Thomas sammen med President Francois Lefeuvre I URSI.

Thomas Gjesteland vant en prestisjefull pris under URSI-møtet i Istanbul i forrige uke. URSI er en verdensomspennende organisasjon for radio science og holder internasjonale møter hvert tredje år. I år var det 1100 deltakere og 1300 arbeider som ble presentert. URSI oppmuntrer yngre forskere og studenter gjennom en egen studentkonkurranse der 10 finalister ble plukket ut etter en grundig prosess for å presentere sitt bidra. Thomas vant fjerde pris, og dette betraktes i det internasjonale miljøet som veldig stort. Her konkurrerer man med studenter fra alle de store universitetene i verden. Både Thomas og veileder fikk mange gratulasjoner kolleger rundt omkring i verden. Vi slutter oss til gratulasjonene!

Veiledende retningslinjer for kreditering av vitenskapelige publikasjoner til institusjoner

Universitet og Høyskolerådet har i samarbeid med Forskningsinstituttenes fellesarena (FFA) og nasjonalt samordningsorgan for helsefaglig forskning (NSG) utarbeidet veiledende retningslinjer for kreditering av vitenskapelige publikasjoner til institusjoner.

Hovedregelen er at en doktorkandidat skal føre opp både gradsgivende og samarbeidende institusjon i publikasjoner som inngår i avhandlingsarbeidet. Det forutsetter at begge parter faktisk bidrar med veiledning på kandidatens publikasjoner. Retningslinjene understøtter med dette partenes felles ansvar overfor kandidaten i PhD-utdanningen.

Rehabilitering av uteområder rundt Realfagbygget

I løpet av de tre neste årene vil uteområdene rundt Realfagbygget rehabiliteres. Rehabiliteringen vil foregå fra 1. september 2011 - 30. november 2013 med avbrekk i eksamensperiodene juni og desember, samt vinterperioden januar-april.

Første del vil bli rehabilitert i perioden 1. september - 30. november 2011. I denne perioden vil området i sør mot Bjørn Trumpys hus bli avsperret, inn-/utgang i sørenden av Realfagbygget vil også stenges. Det vil holdes åpen en passasje langs rullerampen i trappen mellom byggene.

CERN’s CLOUD experiment provides unprecedented insight into cloud formation

CERN melder i en pressemelding om enestående resultater innen CLOUD-eksperimentet hvor professor emeritus Egil Lillestøl var aktiv. Nyheten har å gjøre med svovelsyre, ammoniakk og kosmisk stråling sin rolle i atmosfærisk krystallisering eller samling av aerosoler (svevepartikler) som har innflytelse på jordens klima gjennom forskjellige mekanismer. Ledig stilling som direktør på UNIS

Gunnar Sand slutter som direktør på UNIS på Svalbard og stillinger er nå lyst ut, se stillingsomtalen. Søknadsfristen er 15. september.

NRK Newton søndag med tidligere IFT-student som programleder

Selda Ekiz er programleder i Newton i kommende sesong. Første sending er søndag 28. august kl 18.30 på NRK1 og NRK Super. Ta en kikk på Newtons hjemmeside for mer informasjon.

Ny medarbeider

Jesper Gjerloev hadde sin første arbeidsdag i Romfysikkgruppen 1. august. Han har sin mastergrad fra Universitetet i København i 1994, og PhD i romfysikk fra DTU i 1997. Han har hatt flere forskerstillinger både i Danmark og USA og har siden 2003 vært seniorforsker ved John Hopkins University – Applied Physics Laboratory. Jespers forskning er rettet mot strømsystemer i magnetosfæren, kopling mellom denne og ionosfæren, substormer og konjugerte fenomener. Han har involvert i både rakett- satellitteksperimenter og også initiativtaker til og leder av et verdensomspennende nettverk av magnetografer. Velkommen til Institutt for fysikk og teknologi Jesper!
