Vel overstått sommerferie til alle ansatte og studenter, og et
hjertelig velkommen til Institutt for fysikk og teknologi til alle dere nye
studenter. Det passer godt å begynne semesterets første utgave av IFT-posten med
en gladnyhet: Vi gratulerer professor Bodil Holst med tilslag på
EU-prosjektet NEMI (Scanning NEutral
Helium MIcroscopy: A novel
tool for fast, nondestructive
characterization of mechanical parameters for nanostructured
coatings). Prosjektet har et totalt budsjett på
nesten 5 M hvorav EU bidrar med 3,7 M. Prosjektet ledes fra UiB med 7 andre
deltakere fra Sverige, Danmark, Storbritannia og Spania. Gjennom dette har vi
tatt et skikkelig steg i å nå instituttets strategiske mål om å styrke
andelen EU-finansiert forskning. Men det er fortsatt muligheter for andre som
vil prøve seg, se informasjon under der flere av de siste utlysningene i det

The Roadmap for Discoveries at the LHC I dag fredag 24. august kl 14:15, Auditorium B. Kaffe, te og
kake fra kl 14:00. Since a few years
experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have started exploring the
physics at the high energy frontier. A rich harvest of initial physics results has been obtained by
the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations that allow one already to test, at highest
energies ever reached in a laboratory, the Standard Model (SM) of elementary
particles, and to make searches Beyond the SM (BSM). Significant
results have already been obtained in searches for the Higgs Boson, which
could establish the postulated electro-weak symmetry breaking mechanism in
the SM, as well as for BSM physics like Supersymmetry
(SUSY) with its possible relevance for the Dark Matter in the Universe, Extra
Dimensions, production of new heavy particles and others. The status of these
BSM searches, and their future prospects at the LHC, will be emphasized in
this talk, whereas the details on the Higgs search will be central to a

Norges Tekniske Vitenskapsakedemi arrangerer NTVA Teknologiforum 2012 med tema: Torsdag 6. september, Lerchendal gård, Strindvegen 2. Trondheim Norge er en viktig produsent av olje og gass. Vi har ressurser nok til å kunne være en stabil leverandør i lang tid. Nesten all naturgass som utvinnes fra norsk sokkel eksporteres. Argumenter mot utnyttelse av denne ressursen i Norge er primært knyttet til pris og utslipp av CO2. Seminaret vil rette søkelyset mot mulig bruk av naturgass til annet enn som energikilde i Norge.
