FROM THE HEAD OF DEPARTMENT
It is a
great pleasure to wish you all a happy new year through this year’s first
IFT-Posten which is now out in a new format – thanks to the
Communication Department. We have had a very good start to this year as our
ISP-application ”Strategic development of the Group for Optics and Atomic
Physics” received a good evaluation and was accepted by the Norwegian
Research Council – we would like to congratulate the group and
ourselves! The other two ISP-applications from our department within
theoretical particle physics and space physics are not yet processed as these
are considered as a part of the respective follow-up research programs toward
CERN and space research, respectively. ISP stands for Institute anchored
strategic project and is the Norwegian Research Council’s follow-up of the
international evaluations of research at Norwegian universities. We would
like to wish Jakob Stamnes
welcome back to the department following the termination of his sabbatical stay
in 2011 at the Stevens Institute of Technology and Per Osland
all the best during his sabbatical stay at CERN during the spring semester. Have a
great weekend, Geir
Anton NEWS AND GENERAL INFORMATION
Registration in Cristin
The deadline for registration is February
15, but it is a good idea to start with the registration of the last year’s
achievements in Cristin already now. In addition to the scientific
articles, this applies to newspaper articles, debate contributions, mediation
– also on radio and TV, etc… A good arrangement is that in case of
publications where there are several authors from UoB,
the first author has the responsibility of registering data. Open meeting at the Norwegian Technical Science
Academy
NTVA
invites to a meeting in Bergen with the previous director Ola M Johannessen, The Nansen Center
for Environment and remote measurements:
Tuesday
January 25 at 19:00 in Nansensenteret at Marineholmen, Thormøhlens gate
47. After the meeting fish soup will be served followed by a social
gathering. The price is 100,- NOK per person. Registration
within 15:00 on Thursday January 19, but it is only necessary for those who
would like to join the dinner. Announcement of funds for 2012 under UoB’s agreement with BKK
The funds will contribute to new
knowledge on technological and social consequences of central problems
related to renewable energy and further development of Western Norway as a
competent actor within renewable energy production and future oriented
infrastructure. The funds will, as a main rule, be given as an annual grant, but they may also be given for up to 4 years. Support can be given among others to operation, equipment and scientific assistance. One can apply for a maximum annual support of 300 000 NOK. A broad scientific profile for the projects is highly desirable. The following scientific problems may be relevant:
The
relevant topics are not limited to the above mentioned
five areas, other problems in connection with the agreement’s aims will also
be considered as relevant. The applications should be sent via the faculties
that prioritize the applications. Every application should consist of:
As far as
the funds that will be given in 2012 are concerned, this scheme applies to
departments, academic environments at UoB as well
as permanently employed researchers at UoB. The
applications should be sent to the faculty within January 20. This form should be used. Course in digital photography
The
School Laboratory will be arranging, in cooperation with the Hordaland County Council, a course on the technology
behind digital photography with Johannes Sølhusvik
from Aptina Imaging – one of Norway’s experts
in this field: Wednesday
January 18 at 11:30 in auditorium 5 at Realfagbygget.
All are welcome, butt hose of you who would like to
join the lunch at 11:00 must register themselves via internet or directly by sending an email
to Olaug Vetti Kvam. IFT iN THE media
