From
the head of department
Department council
decided at a meeting last Friday to increase contribution margins on all
externally financed PhD-positions in order to cover all costs related to
these projects and thus reduce the deficit in this year’s budget. We are now
working on a list of the current PhD-positions and this will be presented for
and drafted with research group leaders next Friday. Have a great weekend, News and general information
Horizons – the faculty’s
new lecture series
As previously announced,
the faculty has started a new lecture series called Horizons for all interested. This is a measure which places focus on bigger scientific issues and
challenges which concern us all. Before the lectures one can get a small
snack and a cup of coffee, as well as meet other colleagues both from one’s
own and other departments. The lecturers are instructed to bear in mind that
they have a rather wide audience of different levels of expertise. We do not
have very many interdisciplinary open seminars at the faculty, but this is
one of them. In March the faculty will mark the 150th anniversary of Vilhelm Bjerknes’ birth, and it
will be celebrated with two horizon lectures. Therefore we encourage all of
you to participate in Horizon lectures on March 19 and 22: 1. All are welcome to the
faculty’s guest lecture with Brian
Hoskins, Imperial College: Monday, 19. March 2012, at 10:15 in auditorium
at Vilvite centre. A discussion will be
given of modern climate science, highlighting aspects of it that reflect the
fundamental influence of Vilhelm Bjerknes. These include the scientific approach to
prediction, the seamless nature of the weather and climate problem, and the
attempt to understand phenomena based on materially conserved quantities.
More generally his influence is seen in the drive to provide predictions that
are of practical use to our community. 2. Already the same
week, all are welcome to the next guest lecture in the series with Odd Helge Otterå, Bjerknessenteret
Uni Research: Thursday, 22. March 2012, at 14:15 in auditorium at Vilvite
centre In order to gain an
understanding on how the climate has changed over time, one must turn to the
indirect measurements from the past climate archives. This lecture will have
a special focus on how instrumental the observations and reconstructions of past
climate can be used along with the climate models in order to understand the
natural and man-made climate changes. Join us on this journey from the last
Ice Age to the warm climate of the Stone Age, through
the little ice age and all the way to the global warming we have today. The 7-mountain
Conference
A tempting and exciting programme for the conference is now ready and available
for downloading from the conference webpage where there is also a link for registering. The
conference has also its own page at Facebook. Even if you are not sure if you will be able
to participate, it is still a good idea to mark the date in your calenders. Open meeting at the Norwegian Technical Science Academy
NTVA
invites to a meeting in Bergen with
the managing director Arvid Nøttvedt
of the Christian Michelsen Research Centre: Tuesday, March 20 at 19:00 in Nansen Centre at Marineholmen, Thormøhlens gate
47. Advisor: How to spread information about local arrangements?
If you are having a visit from an important
guest lecturer, are launching something new, arranging a seminar, exhibition,
debate or have other local arrangements? In the
new supervisor you can get practical and simple tips on
how you can spread information to students, employees, external audience or the
media. The supervisor can also be found at Intranet and consists of a Section for communication advice in Communications
department. But don’t forget that IFT-posten is
also an important channel for such information! PhD

The last issue of PhD-news, nr 1. 2012 is
now available for download. STUDENTs
h-bar
We would like to remind you that h-bar is open every
Friday from 19:00-01:00. This week there is a quiz with nice prizes, starting
from 20:00. H-bar is run by Fagutvalget of the Physics department and is primarily
aimed at students – although the employees are also welcome! On March 27 at 19:00 we
will arrange a pub lecture on the topic of Climate research – seen from the perspective of quantum
mechanics at h-bar. TeknoVest’s new webpages
The new net portal of TeknoVest has been launched last week. It shows, among other
things, all of the study programmes within natural
sciences and technology offered at the University of Stavanger, Høgskolen Stord Haugesund, Høgskolen in Bergen,
Sjøkrigsskolen, University of Bergen, Høgskulen in Sogn and Fjordane, and Høgskolen in Ålesund. This year’s TeknoVest-brochure which shows possible transfers between bachelor and
master programmes across the various institutions, can
be downloaded from this page. IFT in
the media
The film entitled The Practical
Professor about research-driven innovation with Erling
Hammer in the main role will be shown at NRK2 as part of the programme called Kunnskapskanalen
