FrOM the head of department
We would like to
congratulate Morten Førre and wish him welcome as professor at the department
as of September 12, 2012. The university administration decided in a meeting
on Thursday to promote him to professor in atomic physics when the
BFS-project «Superintense
laser-molecule interactions», which was led by him for 4 years, is ended.
In accordance with the BFS-agreement the project leader shall be promoted to
professorship if the requirements for a professorship are fulfilled, project
aims are reached and satisfactory skills as research leader are documented. Morten
has managed this perfectly well before the end of the 4 year project is
reached! Once again congratulations. Have a great weekend, News and general

Announcement of SPIRE
– Strategic program for international research- and teaching
collaboration
One can
apply for SPIRE-funds in three categories:
The
department prioritizes and forwards applications to the faculty within June 20, the internal IFT-deadline is then June 18. Here, you
may find the announcement, guidelines and application
form. STAFF
Yesterday Professor Jesper Gjerløv submitted his
application for 80% permission from his duties at the department for a period
of one year from August 1. The reason for this is that his family has not yet
settled in Bergen and they would like their children to continue their
education in the american school system. Therefore, they will be moving back
to the USA in August. The department administration has, together with the
space physics group, prepared a plan so that Prof. Gjerløv can continue
supervising students and the projects he is currently leading as well as
projects he is involved in at UoB. This plan will also cover his role in the
SFF-application. We are all very satisfied with the work Prof. Gjerløv
performs at the department. He is also equally satisfied with the way he was
welcomed at UoB as well as the work going on here. However, we understand and
respect the fact that he prioritizes his family first and on Friday,
forwarded the case to the faculty administration with a recommendation of granting
permission. PhD
