From the Head of departmentI hope all students and employees had a great
summer vacation, and I would like to wish a warm welcome to all of the new
students. It is a great pleasure to begin this semesterÕs
first IFT-posten with a great
news: We would like to congratulate Prof. Bodil
Holst with the recent developments regarding the EU-project NEMI (Scanning NEutral
Helium MIcroscopy: A novel tool for fast, nondestructive characterization of mechanical parameters for nanostructured
coatings). The project has an overall budget of
almost 5 MÛ to which EU contributes with 3,7 MÛ. The project will be managed
from UoB with 7 other participants from Sweden, Denmark,
Great Britain and Spain. With this project we have made a major step toward
fulfilling the departmentÕs strategic target regarding the increase in the
number of EU-financed research projects. However, there are still several
other possibilities for those who would like to secure financial support from
EU. For more on this see the information given under announcements on the 7. framework program. Have a great weekend, News and general
information
IFT seminar
On Friday August 24 we had the following seminar
where the earlier manager of the ATLAS-project at CERN, Peter Jenni, held a lecture: á
The Roadmap for Discoveries at the LHC Since a few years experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have started exploring the physics at the high energy frontier. A rich harvest of initial physics results has been obtained by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations that allow one already to test, at highest energies ever reached in a laboratory, the Standard Model (SM) of elementary particles, and to make searches Beyond the SM (BSM). Significant results have already been obtained in searches for the Higgs Boson, which could establish the postulated electro-weak symmetry breaking mechanism in the SM, as well as for BSM physics like Supersymmetry (SUSY) with its possible relevance for the Dark Matter in the Universe, Extra Dimensions, production of new heavy particles and others. The status of these BSM searches, and their future prospects at the LHC, will be emphasized in this talk, whereas the details on the Higgs search will be central to a forthcoming Colloquium by Prof. S. Bertolucci. We
would like to remind you that we will be receiving a
new visitor from CERN within two weeks in connection with the facultyÕs Horizon lecture series. The research director Sergio Bertolucci
will be, as announced above, holding a lecture on the Higgs boson: Higgs boson discovery. Mark the date in your calendars: Friday September 7 at
11.00 in Egget,
the student center. Announcement of mobility funds under UoBÕs Akademia-agreement with
Statoil
We are pleased to invite applications for funding of activities related to petroleum research, through the ÒAkademiaÓ agreement between UiB and Statoil. The activity must take place in 2012 and you can apply for: 1) Travel to conferences etc. related to petroleum research for up to NOK 25 000 (Funds are not for educational purposes - participation with presentation will be given priority) 2) Visiting guest researchers (travel and stay) Scientific staff and PhD-students can apply. To be evaluated the application MUST include: ¥ Your name and position and where you are employed or registered as a PhD candidate (Department/Research Group) ¥ A specification of purpose /aim ¥ Conference participation ¥ Oral Presentation/Poster ¥ The title of the presentation/ lecture ¥ Information regarding supervisor/research group (name, position), and a short recommendation from the supervisor ¥ Estimated expenses with details including travel budget, conference fee etc. ¥ Whether you have applied other funding ¥ Whether you have received money through the Akademia mobility scheme before, and when, if so. E everyone must give acknowledgment to Statoil on the talks or posters that are made to the conferences funded by ÒAkademiaÓ agreement. Regarding visiting scientists UiB applicant should ensure that the guest is introduced in the relevant Statoil environment. You are encouraged to propose guest lecture at Statoil, in addition to guest lecture at the University of Bergen will be announced for Statoil. Applications and travel claim forms must be marked "Statoil2012" and sent by email to Katrine Kristiansen (Katrine is located at CIPR Unifob, Allegt. 41., tel. 83645). APPLICATION DEADLINE: 31 AUGUST 2012. The committee will use approximately two weeks to evaluate the applications. All applicants will be informed as soon as the evaluations are ready. Conference: Nothern Seas – the

New module in research supervision from
UPED
This fall, the program for university
pedagogic will, in cooperation with UoB, be
offering a course in phd-supervision as a module in
the Development program in university pedagogic: á Research supervision –supervision of phd-candidates In order to be able to participate
it is expected that one has been a phd-supervisor
or is currently supervising a phd-student. The
course will be conducted on September 12. and 13 as
well as October 24. In order to complete the course, one has to be present in
the lectures on all of these dates. The course responsible is Prof. Arild Raaheim
with contribution from Prof. Berit Rokne and Prof. Gina Wisker (University of Seminar on research ethics 2012 The ethics committee at UoB will be arranging a seminar on research ethics. This
yearÕs theme is: October 31 – November 1
at Solstrand Hotel & Bad The
ethics committee is working on finding good lecturers, but would like to ask
all who are interested to mark the date on their calendars now. The committee
will be back with more information during August. The
target group is the research at UoB, however the
seminar will also be open to others who work with and are interested in the questions which will be discussed. MicroNanoBroker: Helping Industry Connect to European PartnersThe Michelsen Centre welcomes you to a workshop on August 29 (11-13) with Dr Liliana Sendler who manages MicroNanoBroker, an EU initiative that helps connecting companies in search of competencies and project partners within micro and nano systems, facilitating both direct R&D cooperation and participation in EU funded research. Read more and register no later than August 27. EU calls published
All 7FP-interested researchers should note that many of the last FP7 Calls are now published. You'll find the Call fiches, the final Work Programmes and the Guides for Applicants filed on the Participant Portal. Please follow the site daily, if the call of interest in is not yet published today. Here are some useful links: á

ERANET To access the Electronic Proposal Submission Service, select your specific call, go to the Electronic Proposal Submission section; choose the sub-scheme you want to apply for from the dropdown list and press "Go". You will then arrive either at the ECAS site (most calls) or at the EPSS start page. Please study the respective user guide document. Register and/or login. Your proposal will be administered by Liv-Grethe Gudmunsden at FAA (phone 84965); please provide her with the ECAS/EPSS access data and contact her for any questions regarding the online proposal submission and administrative details (A forms). She will also provide you with the PIC code. You are adviced to register your proposal as early as possible and to start working on the forms (PartA) immediately. You can also upload the proposal draft at once (without that it is submitted). If you have any questions to the call content and/or need help with proposal preparation don't hesitate to contact Corina Guder (phone 89737). Information meeting Marie Curie Initial Training
Networks
The Research Council would like to
invite to information meeting on Marie Curie Initial Training Networks in
Oslo on August 27. Follow this link for information and registration
(which has to be done immediately). NTVA Teknology
forum 2012
The Norwegian Technical Science
Academy arranges NTVA Teknology forum 2012 with the
following theme: On Thursday September 6, Lerchendal gŒrd,
Strindvegen 2. Trondheim Norway is an important producer of
oil and gas. We have enough resources to become a stable supplier for a long
time. Almost all of the natural gas recovered from the Norwegian continental
shelf is exported. Arguments against the use of this resource in Norway are
primarily connected to price and CO2 release to the atmosphere. The seminar
is aimed at discussing other possible industrial use of natural gas in Norway
than as an energy resource. If you would like to know more on possible
industrial use of natural gas in Norway, you are kindly asked to register to NTVA Teknology forum
2012 within Friday August 31. STAFF
We would like to wish 5 new
colleagues welcome to the department:
