FrOm the head of department
The last week there
were, in connection with the Bergen Research Foundation, several events at
IFT. Heidi Sandaker’s BFS-project DAMARA has been through an unofficial
evaluation. The report is full of praise and confirms that the project is on
course. We would like to congratulate Heidi and the DAMARA-group! On Friday
Morten Førre held a brilliant closing lecture on the BFS-project SILMI. We
would like to congratulate Morten and his team with excellent work and, at
the same time, we would like to wish Morten welcome as professor at IFT. The international
committees, which have been involved here, commend the BFS-concept as an
extremely useful tool to recruit young and talented researchers and to
develop strong research groups. More of us would like to establish a new
agreement between BFS and UiB as soon as possible. Although there’s
deductibles associated with the projects, it is a very beneficial scheme when
it is used according to the department’s strategic plans. Have a good weekend, News and general information
MNF Horizon lecture
All are welcome to the
faculty’s Horizon lecture with research director Sergio Bertolucci at CERN: Friday September 7 at 11:00 in Egget at the Student Center. It would be natural to
expect IFT to be represented strongly! The Kavli Prize week in Bergen
Every second year, The
Norwegian Science Academy grants the Kavli prize in three categories: Astrophysics,
nanoscience and neuroscience. This year, the grants will be given in Oslo on September 4. The following
day the University of Bergen will be visited by Mildred S. Dresselhaus and Ann M.
Graybiel, both from Massachusetts
Institute of Technology and winners of the Kavli prize within nanoscience and neuroscience, respectively. On Wednesday September 5 they
will be holding popular scientific lectures and will be meeting with Siri
Lill Mannes at Hotel Norge. On Thursday September 6 Dresselhaus and Graybiel will
joint the Kavli lectures in Egget at the Student Center, see the program for time and more information. On Thursday,
before the trip to Troldhaugen, Mildred S. Dresselhaus will also visit he

museums – with emphasis on science education
IFT is
the co-host of the conference Learning at science centers and
museums – with emphasis on science education which will be arranged in Bergen September 6-7. The conference is a co-operation
between The Science Center, University of Bergen and The Norwegian Research
Council. For more information on the program, lecturers and registration, contact
