from the head of department
Last Thursday was a
special day for our department. We were visited by two
philanthropists who have and will mean a lot for research (and education!)
within natural sciences and medicine: Trond Mohn and Fred Kavli. You
can read more on this in the relevant section. It is an honor to have such
visitors and I would like to repeat what has been said before – there’s many of us who would like to have a new agreement
between the Bergen Research Foundation and UiB as soon as possible so that we
can use such funds for strategic development of our operations. Many thanks
to Bodil Holst for taking the initiative to make this visit happen! Many thanks also to Anna
Lipniacka for, despite of short notice, filling in for Sergio Bertolucci from
CERN, who could not hold the horizon lecture last Friday due to air travel
strike. And many thanks to Jan Vaagen and Laszlo Csernai for their efforts
during the 24. annual conference of Academia Europea
which took place in Bergen. Best Regards, News and general
information
The great philanthropist visit at IFT
Last week, as you all
know, the Kavli prizes within astro- neuro- and nanosciences were awarded in
Oslo. The prize winners in the last two fields of
science were celebrated, also at UiB. In the middle of the celebrations, Bodil Holst
organized a meeting with Trond Mohn and Fred Kavli at IFT. In addition to
Bodil, Per Osland and Jan Petter Hansen from our department, Kåre Rommetveit
from the Bergen Research Foundation and Thomas E. Everhart from the Kavli
Foundation also attended in the meeting. In a two-hour long
meeting, our visitors were offered a tour of the nano-laboratories
which had received a great deal of support from Trond Mohn. Per
Osland gave a short orientation on the research carried out in Heidi
Sandaker’s BFS-project, which overlaps with Kavli’s fascination with
astrosciences. Otherwise, Trond Mohn and Fred Kavli have underlined many
times the importance of basic research in natural sciences during their
conversation. They have also said that they will continue contributing to
development of science the same way they have been doing and that they enjoy coming into contact with the academia in
this way. Bodil

department administration constantly receives frustration messages from
supervisors and members in the examination committees. These are mostly
related to the conditions in connection with grading M.Sc. theses. Under the
auspices of the national faculty meeting for natural sciences, new common
guidelines for grading M.Sc. theses in natural sciences were prepared. The
department administration would like to encourage all of you to attend a
miniseminar on the implementation of the new routines:
In connection with the seminar, the head of the workgroup which prepared the new guidelines, Carl Henrik Gørbitz, UiO, will give a presentation of the work that has been done. Gørbitz will give a summary of the work that has been done. He will also og through the guidelines, supervisor and external examiner routines as well as external examiner forms. He will also give some views on the use of the grading. After the presentation time will be allocated for discussions. All scientific employees who supervise M.Sc. students are asked to take part in the seminar. You can also invite your external examiner contacts in connection with grading M.Sc. theses. The research center NORCOWE and Arena NOW will be arranging a conference on offshore wind
power with emphasis on measurement techniques, operation and control of wind
farms. The conference
is on September 19. in Bergen. M.Sc. students
and employees can attend the conference free of charge. Registration through registration form. Registration must be done as soon as possible. IFT Strategy- and HMS-dayAll
permanent employees at the department must reserve all of Monday November 26.
for the department’s annual strategy- and HMS-day. It
is mandatory to attend for all who are not permitted, on sabbatical leave or
do not have any good reasons for not attending. The event will take place in
one of Bergen’s hotels and will begin with breakfast at 09.00 and will end
with (Christmas) dinner at 17.00. We will have the following themes this year: ·
Status on follow-up of the department’s strategic plan 2011-15 ·
Center for excellent education/ report from the committee evaluating
the undergraduate teaching · IFT Alumni ·
HMS with emphasis on the laboratories There’s
going to be both lectures, group work, conversations
and discussions. Reserve the time! PhD
Funding for doctoral training activities
Candidates accepted to the PhD-study at the
Department of Physics and Technology may apply for funding for research
education activities. The applicants must be registered as PhD-student the
present semester in order to apply. Applicants without any external
economical support (Quota, University scholarships, Self-financing
PhD-students) will be prioritized. Funding for the following activities can
be applied for: A)
Research stay at a
foreign University or research institution B)
Participation at
advanced courses, workshops, symposia, conferences etc (we don't cover the
conference fee) C)
Purchase of
training/teaching at the Ph.D.-level D)
Participation in
courses/subjects/field courses resulting in credits and that are part of the
individual study. E)
Research courses
in science subjects. The doctoral training activity must be completed
within 01.12.2012. Download the application form and send the application to Kristine Indahl Helle (room 348) by
the deadline, which is 24.09.12. STUDENTs
h-barH-bar is open every Friday 19.00-01.00. H-bar is run by the
scientific committee at the department and is primarily for the students of
our department. Employees are, however, also welcome! Final M.Sc. examinationStine Faugstad will take
the final M.Sc. examination in process technology with the following thesis:
On Thursday, September 20 at 10:15 in room 456, Department of Physics and Technology. The thesis
supervisors are Bjørn Kvamme and Inge Lund Nilsen (Kanfa Aragon). The great semester partyNew and senior students
and employees are all welcome to ”the great semester party”! There is going
to be a great program with information about the department. Senior students
will also be telling about their experiences with the studies and the
transition to the business life. This is a golden chance to meet and get to know
new faces at the department! Food will be served. The bar is also going to
be open.
The employees and M.Sc.
students will have the special duty of making sure that the B.Sc. students
will enjoy themselves and get to know the department’s diversity. Reserve the
time. Many thanks to the scientific committee for taking the initiative in
connection with this get together which was a great success last year. IFT in the media
