From the head of department

In accordance with the department’s strategic plan, a committee has now evaluated and recommended measures for changes and improvements of the basic education in physics at IFT. In their report they recommend possible models which are based on changing the existing model so that the students get to work with physics earlier, and on establishing new basic courses where both theory and laboratory exercises are integrated. We would like a best possible process in the future and will, therefore, reserve time for this subject during our Strategy- and HMS-seminar on November 26 in which participation of all employees is expected. Many thanks to the committee for their good job: Jan Petter Hansen (leader), Bodil Holst, Kjellmar Oksavik and the students Kristoffer Johansen and Agnethe Olsen.

Have a great week,
Geir Anton

All are welcome to the Horizon lecture with Lynn Rothschild, NASA:

·      Innovation in Space Discoveries: Is There Life Out There?

Thursday, September 27. At 15.00 in Egget, Studentsenteret

  This year’s Birkeland prize is awarded to earlier IFT-student

Description: DrYara’s Birkeland prize for 2012 at 100.000 NOK is awarded to Dr. Yun Cheng (see the photo) for her PhD dissertation "Hydrodynamics and Freeze Out Problems in Energetic Heavy Ion reactions". Professor Laszlo Csernai at IFT was her thesis supervisor. Yara’s CEO Jørgen Ole Haslestad delivered the prize at the Norwegian Science Academy in connection with the Birkeland lecture on September 20. Yun Cheng defended her thesis in 2010 and is currently employed as Assoc. Professor at the Central China Normal University in Wuhan in China.

The scientific committee evaluates the candidates with emphasis on how much the content of the theses will contribute to technological breakthroughs and innovation. The prize shall be focused on environment and technology, and lead to interest for research and development across disciplines.

Vi gratulerer!

  Research days 2012 in Bergen

The event ”Research days in Bergen” has started and due to a mistake the announcement was somewhat unfair in the last issue of IFT-posten. Please check out the web page for complete overview of the program and the arrangements. On Tuesday, September 25 there is going to be myths and facts at the Tivoli at Det akademiske kvarter. Our own Ragnhild Schrøder Hansen will be, together with Jobin Varughese and Jarle Diesen, showing what is true and what is just a myth.

  Fund your risky ideas with FET-Open Track!

Within the FP7 ICT Cooperation programme, the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) scheme acts as the pathfinder for mainstream ICT research. FET-Open is specifically designed to be open and responsive to fresh thinking. With the Objective ICT-2013.9.5 called Xtrack (FP7-ICT-2013-X) ideas get supported which would not be supported elsewhere in the ICT Work programme. It seeks:

·       foundational breakthroughs within a clear long-term vision that is far beyond the state of the art;

·       novelty coming from new, high-risk ideas rather than from the refinement of current ICT approaches;

·       new inter-disciplinary collaborations.

The funding scheme is STREP (Small and medium-scale focused research projects; cooperative), usually 2-3 years duration, and the indicative budget distribution is EUR 15 million. Submission and evaluation are continuous, with final deadline 29 January 2013.

There is a new and lighter submission process with one-stage submission scheme. The project proposal is max. 10 pages, the evaluation faster and the project implementation simpler. This pilot bridges to the implementation of the FET Open Scheme in Horizon2020. Get in touch with the Division of Research Management for any help: Corina Guder (555 89737) or Anja Hegen (555 82012).

  Announcement of researcher exchange between UiB and University of Washington (UW)/ Memorial University (MU)

The announcement applies to scientific employees and PhD students within all disciplines. The research stay can be used for the purpose of research, teaching or a combination subject to agreement with the host institution. The announcement can be downloaded from here. The application deadline is on Friday, November 2.

  The voice of an angel with physicist and comedian Helen Arney

This Saturday at 20.00 Studentersamfunnet presents, in cooperation with the Research days event, physicist/comedian Helen Arney with her show The Voice of an Angle. More information about the show can be found here.

Prof. Ludvig Muren at the University of Århus is employed as Prof. II in radiotherapy for 3 years as of July 1. 2012. Major part of his position is funded by Helse Bergen. Ludvig will, together with Renate Grüner and several others at the department, take part in developing the collaboration between IFT and Haukeland University Hospital. He will be responsible for a new course in radiotherapy which, together with the PHYS212 Medical physics and technology course, will constitute the mandatory part of the discipline with the same name.

STUDENTs

  Application deadline for travel and seminar support for M.Sc. students, fall 2012

Have you travelled or are you planning to travel on field work, conference/seminar during the fall of 2012? You can then apply for financial support (max. 7500,- NOK during the entire M.Sc. studies). See for more information and download application form. The travel which is to be funded has to take place between September 1, 2012 and December 1, 2012. The application form can be sent to/delivered to Kristine Indahl Helle until Tuesday, October 1. Applications which are delivered after the deadline will not be evaluated.

  h-bar

H-bar is open every Friday 19.00-01.00.

H-bar is run by the Scientific Committee at the department and is primarily for the students – but employees are also welcome!

  Final M.Sc. examination

Diego Armando Hernandez Rubio will take the final examination for the M.Sc. degree in process technology with the following thesis title:

  • Tape Casting of Lanthanum Chromite

Monday September 24 at 08.15 in room 292, IFT. The thesis supervisor is Alex C. Hoffmann.

IFT in the media

In order to be able to track down all dissemination efforts, it is important that all employees and students provide a tip. We need to know the name of all who are mentioned / interviewed at IFT, title and link as well as channel and date. We would like to receive a scanned copy of the contribution for those that are available only on paper. Remember that most newspapers etc. will, upon request, provide a pdf of interviews and other forms of dissemination.
