From the head of department

This Friday I will dedicate a line to our canteen and encourage all of the people from our department to stop by and visit it regularly. This is important for the cohesion at our department, as well as giving Tran the best terms for continuing the business. She has always had a lot of assistance and help from her late husband Vu who died last week. So, perhaps you too can drop by a few days a week and enjoy a meal together with your colleagues and students?

Have a great weekend,
Geir Anton

News and general information

The Meltzerfond and Universitetsfond – the first deadline is December 1

Application database for the Meltzerfond and the Universitetsfond is now partly opened.

  • Meltzerfond gives out funds for research prizes, travel stipends for researchers, and project stipends to students and PhD-candidates. Due to poor returns in the fond’s investments this year, it will not be possible to apply for research projects this time.
  • Universitetsfond gives out funds for projects for mediation and publishing of research results, as well as to the holding of scientific conferences and workshops.

The application for these funds should be done electonically, read here for Meltzerfond and here for Universitetsfond. Application deadline is December 1 for all except researchers who apply for Meltzerfond – in their case, the application deadline this year is extended to December 31.

The Meltzerfond gives out annually the prize for younger researchers and for groundbreaking research mediation. Professors and department heads at UoB can suggest candidates for the Meltzerfond prizes. Well-grounded suggestions on potential prize-candidates should be sent to the fond within December 1. For more information and answers to the frequently asked questions on prizes and methods for nominating the candidates, read here for guidelines and here for the checklist for suggestions. For additional questions contact Bente Krossøy (55582023) at the university director’s office.

Planning of a proton therapy center in Norway

As many of you already know, the government intends to allocate in its state budget 15 million kroner to Helse Vest which will lead the work with planning a Norwegian center for particle therapy, check out the press release from the Ministry of Health and Care. They are working on setting up a committee for drafting of reports, and IFT will most likely also be represented.

At the same time, Dieter Röhrich will also participate in one of the three working groups organized by The Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee (NuPECC) which will prepare an information leaflet with a working title "Nuclear Physics in Medicine". Dieter is part of the working group for hadron therapy.

Open lecture in PHYS 328 Selected topics in measurement science

Description: TMC

Technology director Magne Husebø from CMR  will hold a lecture in PHYS 328 which is open for all who are interested:

  • Oil and gas measurement technology gaps as per OG21 2012 strategy
  • Wednesday, November 14, from 12:15-13:30 in room 292, IFT.

OG21 is a Task Force established by the Norwegian Oil and Energy Department, assisting the petroleum industry in establishing a national technology strategy for added value and competitive advantage in the oil and gas industry. In 2012 OG21 released four new strategy documents in the following areas:

·       TTA1: Energy efficient and environmentally sustainable technologies

·       TTA2: Exploration and IOR

·       TTA3: Cost-efficient drilling and intervention

·       TTA4: Future technologies for production, processing and transport.

All four strategy documents include technology gap descriptions relating to measurement technology.  The lecture will focus on describing the strategic measurement technology gaps and give information on current status for research and development in selected areas, flow assurance, environment and integrity monitoring in particular.

Application for parking spaces in Dokkeveien for 2013

For 2013, we also intend to rent out parking spaces in UoB’s parking lot in Dokkeveien. Those of you who wish to apply for renting out a parking space in 2013 should send their applications to Eiendomsavdelingen latest by 20. November 2012 by using an individual application form. The forms can be obtained from Eiendomsavdelingen’s weboages. More information on renting parking spaces can be found in a letter from Eiendomsavdelingen.
