A WORD from the head of department

Last Friday we had the premiere of the film ”A Practical Professor” and a lot of people showed up. Those who did not have a chance to see it yet, can enjoy it in peace and in good quality at Vimeo, check the link below. Otherwise, we would like to recommend the 7-fjells conference on Renewable Energy which is an important meeting place for all interested or active in Norway’s role in meeting the global need for more energy. Bear in mind that it is also possible for students to participate free of charge at this conference!

A great weekend to all of you,
Geir Anton

news and general information

  Registration in Cristin

The deadline for registering is 15. February and those who still haven’t done it, must now also upload the year’s achievements in Cristin where you have to log in as UoB employee (UiB-ansatt). In addition to the scientific articles, this also refers to popular articles, debate contributions, media appearances – both radio and TV, etc. Also, in case of several authors from UoB, it is the first author’s responsibility to upload the data.

7-fjellskonferansen (The 7-mountains conference) Renewable Energy

A tempting and exciting programme for the conference is now ready and available for downloading from the conference webpage where there is also a link for registering. The conference has also its own page at Facebook. Even if you are not sure if you will be able to participate, it is still a good idea to mark the date in your calendars.

  Lakselaget Scholarship

Lakselaget Offers Scholarships to Minnesota and Norwegian Women for the ninth time in its ten-year history. The application deadline is March 1, 2012.

Lakselaget offers scholarships to Minnesota women desiring to study in Norway and to Norwegian women wishing to study in Minnesota or at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks. The organization also provides grants to Minnesota professional women who have an opportunity to work in Norway and to Norwegian women who have an opportunity to work in Minnesota. The grants are meant to supplement wages lost for experience gained. Applicants should have an interest in contemporary Norway and in the sciences, technology, business, politics, language and culture, or in the cooperation between the countries. The Lakselag Scholarship Fund was established to celebrate, encourage and advance the organization's motto: women who swim against the current. Its goal is to promote international connections between Minnesota and Norway and allows recipients to obtain, teach and share knowledge that will benefit women in their complex roles in today's society.

Lakselaget is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization for professional women and college and university students who are Norwegian, of Norwegian descent, or are interested in contemporary Norwegian issues and all things Norwegian. The organization meets the first Saturday of each month from October through May to network, mentor, eat salmon, and receive information from a variety of noteworthy speakers. Topics range from the arts to health, history, sports, heritage and beyond. For more information about the scholarship and opportunity fund application process, visit the website or contact Foundation Director Karin Holt.

  Register for IFT alumni!IFT-alumni!

IFT Alumni is a tool designed primarily for keeping contact with our former students once they are done with their education, or at least to be able to follow where they go later with their work careers. IFT Alumni is open for the current and former students (master and PhD), as well as department employees. Registration is optional and voluntary, but we hope that the majority will join. We have chosen two parallel solutions for this:

  • LinkedIn which already has a great number of users who regularly update their profiles. LinkedIn is so to speak a career network or medium with some similarities to Facebook, and it can be used for a lot more than just IFT Alumni, for those who are interested to do so. It is easy to create user profile and upload as much information as you want. After registration, you choose groups and search at ”Institutt for fysikk og teknologi, UiB”. Many of IFT’s former students and employees are already registered as LinkedIn users and all you need to do is search for the group. There is otherwise also a whole bunch of other subject and interest groups one can connect with.
  • UiB Alumni which is UoB’s own web portal with a vast number of various groups. One of these is also Fysikk og teknologi and there you may register by logging in with username and password for UoB’s computer system, and then choose ”Alumnusgrupper”, ”>Faglig” and then ”Fysikk og teknologi” and ”>Meld ". Students can do this up to one year after their last exam. If more than a year has passed, former students need to register manually. Here there are also other groups you can connect with.

It would be great if you use both, it doesn’t take such a long time to upload your information. Don’t forget that e-mail address and mobile phone number are the minimum required in order to be able to keep contact whith others. Apart from the time required for registration and updates, there is no other cost or time-loss regarding this. The aim of IFT Alumni is primarily to have all contact information gathered and available for all participants, but both at UiB Alumni and LinkedIn it is possible to start and participate in various discussions for those who wish to do so. It is also possible to choose how many automatic e-mails you will be receiving in your mailbox. We hope that as many as possiblewill join these groups. Please do spread the word among the former employees and students with whom you are still in touch, and ask them also to spread the word!
