From the head of department
It is a great pleasure to wish everyone welcome back to a new
semester – a special welcome goes to all of the new students. We hope you
will enjoy yourselves and be fascinated by physics and technology! NOKUT has made a decision as to
which educational excellence center applications will go further to the next
round of evaluations. IFT's application was unfortunately not among the ones
to be evaluated in the next round. We would like to thank Bjørn Tore
Hjertaker together witj Stein Dankert
Kolstø, Kjellmar Oksavik, Anna Lipniacka, Pawel Kosinski, Kjartan Olafsson,
Hulda Fadnes and Rune Stadsnes for their excellent efforts during the
application process – it has not been easy! We would like to congratulate the
Department of Biology with their participation in the final round and wish
them all the best in the evaluation process. We would also like to thank Anna Lipniacka who together with Per
Osland, Kjellmar Oksavik, Geir Ersland and Håvard Helstrup, did a great job
for making the Fysikermøtet 2013 a success both technically and socially.
Well done! And many thanks to everyone who participated in Fysikermøtet 2013. Finally, on behalf of everyone, I would like to thank Per Osland for
his work as the president of the Norwegian Physics Society. Professor Åshild
Fredriksen of the University of Tromsø was elected to be the new president
during the society's annual meeting. Have a good one! News and general informationFysikermøtet 2013On August 7-10, Fysikermøtet 2013 was arranged in Bergen
by Anna (leader), Geir E, Håvard and Kjellmar. Nearly 100 participant
attended the meetings. The highlights of the meeting were the lectures on
LHC-physics, radiotherapy, The Birkeland Center, High-energy cosmic
radiation, physics in oil exploration, Niels Bohr, non-linear optics at the
nanoscale and education. The lecture are available at
web.ift.uib.no/fysikermotet2013.
A new addition was the Martin Landrø prize for excellent
M.Sc. Theses, which was awarded jointly to Anders Kvellestad (UiB, 2011) and
Tomas K Eriksen (UiO, 2012).
The highlight of the social program was the return trip with ”DS OSTER” after the tour of Mongstad. A Lego-model of the ATLAS-detector (9517 pieces), was built by enthusiastic youth, including Lego League, Bergen. STAB
Seminar on Open Access
All are welcome to the
seminar on Open Access:
Wednesday, September 25. In the new research report the government
requires that the results of research activities funded by public sources be
open to everyone. In connection with this, a seminar on Open Access will be
arranged by UoB, Norwegian School of Economics and the University College of
Bergen in cooperation with CRIStin. The seminar is intended for those who
would like to know more about Open Access, the constraints imposed on Open
Access in Norway and EU and the effects of this on the researchers. The
seminar is open for everyone, but is primarily intended for researchers, academic managers and research
