From the head of department

Everything is ready for the welcoming of the new bachelor students at 15:00 today! To the new bachelor students or those of you who already started their studies and would like to know more about the department and MSc degree possibilities: Join us today! Lecturer Rune Stadsnes from Fyllingsdalen High-School and senior research engineer Lene Sælen from Christian Michelsen Research/ Prototech are going to be there to tell more about their past as MSc students at IFT, their career developments – they surely have some good suggestions and tips to those who already started their BSc degrees. Welcome!

  IFT open seminar

  Horizon Lectures

All are welcome to the Horizon Lectures where Ewan Birney, European Bioinformatics Institute, European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), will be giving a lecture:

Access control: switch to new card readers

During the fall semester, the card readers at Bjørn Trumpys building will be upgraded. This means that all cards produced before 2009 must be renewed. In case you have such an old card you have to get in touch with Karen Margrete in the expedition. She can help you to order a new card. In case you are unsure you can test your card .

  No 100- and 200-level lectures on October 15

On the way – week will be arranged as usual on Tuesday during week 42. For this reason, it was decided to cancel all 100- and 200-level lectures on that day. At IFT, the 200-level courses are usually taken by MSc students. Please let Kristine know, if you think that a 200-level class is affected unnecessarily by the arrangement.

  Closing down of the information center at the glass building on October 1

The information center has its last working day on September 31. As of October 1, students will find all information on the web and at the information centers at their faculties.

  Invitation to a 3-day radiation protection course, October 22-24 2013

The HMS-section at the Staff- and organizational department at the University of Bergen invites to a 3-day radiation protection course. The target groups for the course are:

·     Local radiation protection coordinators. The course is obligatory for coordinators who have not yet attended the course.

·     Employees and Phd- and MSc students who use (or will use) ionizing radiation in their work.

·     Employees who would like a refreshment on the topic.

  Mobility stipend for Iceland

New mobility stipends for Iceland are now announced for students and researchers. Please note the deadline for students on October 1 2013. Mobility from Norway to Iceland will be prioritized in this round of applications.  More information can be found on http://arcticstudies.is.

  Fulbright stipend

October 1 2013 is the deadline to apply for Fulbright-stipend for the academic year 2014-15.

One can apply for

·        Arctic Chair

·        Researcher stipend (must have completed PhD)

·        Student stipend (MSc and ph.d level)

  Funding for doctoral training activities

Candidates accepted to the PhD-study at the Department of Physics and Technology may apply for funding for research education activities. The applicants must be registered as PhD-student the present semester in order to apply. Applicants without any external economic support (Quota, University scholarships, Self-financing PhD-students) will be prioritized. Funding for the following activities can be applied for:

 

A)   Research stay at a foreign University or research institution

 

B)   Participation at advanced courses, workshops, symposia, conferences etc (we don't cover the conference fee)

 

C)  Purchase of training/teaching at the Ph.D.-level

 

D)  Participation in courses/subjects/field courses resulting in credits and that are part of the individual study.

 

E)   Research courses in science subjects.

 

The doctoral training activity must be completed within 01.12.2013. Download the application form and give/send the application to Kristine Indahl Helle (room 354) by the deadline, 24.09.13.

  Application deadline for travel- and seminar support for MSc students, fall 2013

Have you or are you planning to travel on field work, conference/seminar in the fall of 2013? You can apply for financial support  (max.  7500,- NOK for the entire MSc study). The travel has to take place between September 1, 2013 and December 1, 2013. Application form (Download the form for travel support or seminar support) can be sent / delivered to Kristine Indahl Helle, within Tuesday, September 24. Applications received after the deadline will not be processed. More information and guidelines can be found here.

H-bar is open every friday 19.00-01.00.

On Tuesdays, every even numbered week, pub-lectures are held at H-bar. More info at H-bar's facebook page.

H-bar is run by Fagutvalget at the department and is primarily for the department's students – but employees are also welcome!
