From the head of department

Today we would like to congratulate our colleague Øystein Olsen with his 70th birthday and wish him all the best as a pensioner and active emeriti as of October 1. Øystein earned his Cand. Real. Degree in 1981 and was first employed as research assistant until he became an associate professor in 1985. We would like to stress and commend Øystein's great efforts regarding teaching within electronics and signal processing. We appreciate the fact that he will continue at our department as active emeriti.

  Dieter Röhrich nominated for the Lecturer Prize

"The Scientific Committee of Physics and Technology has received nominations of lecturers for the "Lecturer Prize 2013". The Committee has decided to nominate Dieter Röhrich due to his ability to inspire scientific interest and to successfully mediate difficult and heavy topics."

 

  Fall meeting at SFF Birkeland Center

In March 2013, IFT was awarded a new center of excellence, Birkeland Centre for Space Science. This week, the center arranged a workshop at IFT with more than 40 of its researchers from UiB, UNIS and NTNU. In addition, external members and guests from DTU, Tromsø Geophysical Observatory and the Technical University of Barcelona attended the workshop. During the meeting, the last research results on the interaction between the earth and space were presented and discussed. Also, plans for future work were prepared. The meeting has shown that the center is properly functioning and is very well placed in terms of all objectives such as employment, publications and press reports.

 

 

 

    Open meeting at Norges Tekniske Vitenskapsakademi

NTVA invites to a meeting in Bergen with professor Arne Graue (IFT):

  • Energy for the Future - CO2 Sequestration in Hydrates with Associated Gas Production

Tuesday October 15 at 19:00 at Nansensenteret in Marineholmen, Thormøhlens gate 47. After the meeting there will be a meal with fish soup and social gathering. The price is 100,- NOK per person. Registration must be done within 15.00 on Thursday October 10. Registration is required only for those who would like to join the meal.

 

  Announcement of funds under UiB's agreement with BKK

The funds will mainly be given as a one-year support, primarily to Msc students who work with projects related to the collaboration agreement BKK-UiB. One can apply for funding of study related travels, conferences or field work. Maximum amount that can be awarded to a student is NOK 50 000.

The applications should be sent to the faculty who will then rank the applications before being forwarded to the Department of Research Administration. All applications should contain the following:

a. Project description (The project goals), max 1 page

b. Budget

  Half-day seminar on Multicultural communication

All are welcome to half-day seminar where Riccardi Pellegrino will be giving a lecture:

Tuesday October 8 from 11.30 until 15:30 at the Kurslokalet C.G.Sundts hus (Muséplass 1, basement)

Pellegrino Riccardi has lived in Norway since 1995 and is known as one of Scandinavia's absolutely best multicultural communication experts. He has a long and high profiled customer list with among others Statoil, Telenor, Aker Solutions, Statkraft, Ministry of foreign affairs and Det Norske Veritas. In his lectures, he will focus on how we preceive ourselves and how others perceive us. He will also talk about the opportunuties for cultural differences. As an immigrant in Norway, he has established his thoughts about Norwegians, and will present some of his thoughts on what is positive and negative with being exactly like Norwegians.

  Course on Research Communication

Aftenposten is delighted to invite young researchers of up to 45 years old to intensive writing course/ two-day workshop on research communication on October 14. and 15. at the University of Bergen.

For those of you who are interested, there will be an opportunity to publish the articles you work on during the workshop through Aftenposten's different channels on the web, mobile and in the printed paper version.
