From the head of department

Many of you have possibly noticed the recent debate on the Akademiaavtalen both in På Høyden and in national press otherwise. Unfortunately, different issues are being mixed together: UiB's integrity is being questioned with respect to receiving research funding from businesses – this is not understandable from both the national and the international policies regarding research funding. Secondly, it is being questioned whether it is justifiable for UiB to continue research within petroleum as this potentially extends the oil era – the arguments are then linked to the climate debate and the aim of maximum two degrees global warming within 2050. Sustainability is then considered only with respect to climate, while energy security and economics are not considered to be important. There is no question that the world needs more energy and the MN-faculty has for many years worked in order to strengthen energy research outside petroleum and is ready to increase its efforts. Then the politicians, who have committed Norway to the two degrees target, should also become more visible with more funding on other energy resources. IFT is not the department which has benefited most from the Akademiaavtalen, but we are very satisfied with the projects this scheme has financed and appreciate Statoil's contribution in a time where basic funding is constantly under pressure.

Have a good one,
Geir Anton

News and general information

  IFT open seminar

All are welcome to the open seminar where Prof. Dr. Johan Rafelski, LULI/Ecole Polytechnique Paris/CERN and Department of Physics, University of Arizona will be giving a lecture:

Friday, December 13 at 14:15, Auditorium B. Coffee, tea and cakes from 14:00

NB: Registration of absence from the department

We would like to again remind that ALL employees with more than 20% position will ALWAYS register their 1-day or longer leaves from the department. The department's registration of absence form SHALL be used – and it is does not take a long time to fill out. This applies to all absences such as holidays, work related travels, sick leave and home office. If possible, a contact phone number shall be given for all absences which are not related to holiday or sick leaves. Cellular phones are preferred, alternatively the hotel number, the number of the visited institution or similar can be given. This helps the department to contact you or to pass on the message from others trying to contact you regarding important and urgent issues. This also means that it is important to give the destination so that time-zone differences can be taken into account.

  Christmas closed canteen

The canteen will be closed as of December 14 before Christmas holidays.

  Deadline for submitting variable vouches

The department has received a message from the Salary Office stating that the deadline for submitting variable vouches for this year is on December 11, 2013. This means that the department must receive these latest within December 9, 2013. Variable vouchers are travel claims, fees, hourly wage etc.

The last possibility for writing checks is on Thursday, December 19.

Announcement of funds - Peder Sather Center for Advanced Study

As of January 1, 2014 it is going to be possible to apply for research funds from Peder Sather Center for Advanced Study. The application deadline is on February 1. More information about the announcement can be found here.

  SPIRE workshop

All are welcome to the UIB-SPIRE workshop:

December 9 - 13, room 546

Constitution Anniversary 2014 at the University of Bergen

May 17, 2014 is going to be the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian Constitution. Due to Wilhelm F. K. Christie's role in the history of 1814 the anniversary will be especially important at the University of Bergen in 2014. A program committee is appointed. This committee is going to work out the program for UiB's celebration of the anniversary. Program and more information will be available on the anniversary pages.
