department
For us physicists, the
highlight of this week is surely the awarding of the 2013 Nobel prize in
physics to Peter W. Higgs and François Englert for, as stated: the theoretical discovery of a
mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of
subatomic particles, and which recently was confirmed through the discovery
of the predicted fundamental particle, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at
CERN's Large Hadron Collider. In
this regard, Heidi Sandaker, Anna Lipniacka and Bjarne Stugu's
insight article in Sunday's Bergens Tidende: Mysteriet Higgs is recommended for everyone. For those of you who
have not yet understood what the Higgs boson is, UiO-professor
Alex Read's short movie is recommended. We would like to

Publication
of LHC-data – IFT pioneers
LHC will publish data outside the organization for, among others, use in teaching. At
IFT, already in 2011, BSc students started using the LHC-data for
calculations of the top quark mass in the PHYS117 course. IFT is therefore a
pioneer in the use of LHC-data for teaching purposes. Bergen Summer Research School 2014
