From
the head of department
Application deadline for
the current opening for a professor/ associate professor in theoretical particle
physics has expired and we can now happily announce that we have received 35 applications.
Of all the applicants, there are only 2 Norwegian and unfortunately only 4 women.
In the process, we receive applications from two international nestors within
the field of particle physics which gave us no less than 330 names of
potential applicants or group leaders from all over the world the announcement to whom has been sent.
This opening position has in addition been announced in several international
journals and channels, and the group itself actively contributed in spreading
the information. It is important and
valuable to have a looke at the Team Atakan and take up the challenge we have in achieving
better gender balance within UoB, but equality also means that the best
qualified gets the job. Team Atakan’s proposal to employ more women, can perhaps
function in some areas, but in the field of physics we might face greater
challenges if we are to insist on the minimum of 40% female applicants for
taking the process one step ahead. One of the measures that could perhaps
contribute to an increase in the number of women in scientific positions, is if we got the opportunity to evaluate the
applicants to positions such as professor/ associate professor within two
categories and choose to employ a (young) promising associate professor,
rather than an (older) established professor. We have no chance for a dilemma
of the kind when all professor exoerience come before those who are not there
yer. Have a nice weekend! News and

Utlysing av forskningsmidler - Peder Sather
Grant Program
The Peder Sather Center for
Advanced Study has been founded in May 2012 by signing an agreement between
UC Berkely, Norwegian Research Council and 8 Norwegian universities, along
with the University of Bergen. The goal of Peder Sather Center for Advanced
Study is to strengthen the research cooperation between UC Berkely and the 8 Norwegian
universities. One of the things resulting from
this project is also the Peder Sather Grant Program which finances: ·
Seed
grants (USD 5 000 - USD 20 000) ·
Full
grants (USD 25 000 - USD 75 000) to cooperation projects between researchers
of UoB and UC Berkeley. This programme finances projects within all scientific areas. Application deadline is 15. March 2013 You can
find the announcement for the Peder Sather Grant Program here. E-books from Cambridge
University Press
Natural Sciences Library
has started from February a trial project with e-books from Cambridge University Press. More infomation on this project here. If any of you
have any views on this product, please give your feedback at the end of the
month to Ingunn Rødland at the Natural Sciences Library, phone: 55 58 48 15. Horizon lecture - cancelled
This week’s Horisonter
lecture with Professor Andrew Read, Pennsylvania State University, USA will unfortunately have to be
cancelled. IFT in
