From the head of
department
As mentioned before, University of Bergen is
arranging the Alumni Days for the first time on Friday May 9 and Saturday May
10 2014. This is going to be a weekend with scientific input, social
gathering and a broad selection of popular scientific contributions. We encourage all our employees and students, as well
as previous students and partners, to register at the Alumni portal –
all who has completed a degree or taken exams at UoB
can register themselves as alumni. Registration form for employees can be found on this
link and they
will not be paying the registration fee, but they of course have to be
registered as alumni. The registration deadline is on May 1. Have a good one. Kjartan Olafsson News and general

Announcement of YARA'S BIRKELAND PRIZE 2014
Yara's Birkeland Prize in physics and chemistry will be awarded
on the basis of a PhD-degree completed at a Norwegian university. The prize
alternates between physics and chemistry. It is awarded in chemistry every
odd-numbered year and in physics it is awarded every even-numbered year. In
2014 the prize will therefore be awarded within physics. The prize consists
of 100 000 NOK and a diploma. The prize will be awarded during the Birkeland lecture which, in 2014, will be held at the
Norwegian Technical Science Academy on a Thursday in September. Potential
candidates must have completed their PhD-degrees within the last two years.
The thesis shall correspond with the spirit of Kristian Birkeland's
research. Among others the keywords in this respect are: innovation,
pioneering, innovative, coupling between theory and empirical studies, interdisciplinarity, technological innovation, industrial
application, environmental relevance. Research groups, supervisors and
permanent scientific employees at a Norwegian university can nominate candidates.
The nomination shall include the name of the candidate, where the research
has been conducted, supervisors, candidate's current
employer, a detailed description of the PhD-work and an evaluation of the
relevance of the work within today's research. A copy of the PhD dissertation
shall be attached, either in paper (3 examples) or as a pdf document. Data safety
