From the head of department

In the beginning of this week, the list of applicants for the position as the head of department was ready, and with many good applicants on the list, everything is ready for the new head of department to start by April 1 – we will just need to wait for the committee to submit its reccommendation to the faculty board. In addition, it is a great pleasure to announce that we finally signed a contract with Dr. Jörn Kersten and wish him welcome to the department as Professor of theoretical particle physics as of May 1.

Have a good one!

News and general information

  Information on receiving a IAESTE-intern

IAESTE is an international student organization which primarily works with exchange of interns, mainly within natural sciences and technology related studies. IAESTE's goal is to promote international understanding and provide students with relevant internships. Exchange between countries happens on a 1-to-1 basis. This means that for every foreign student we receive, we can send a Norwegian student for a relevant internship abroad.

The scientific employees who are interested and who have the capacity to receive an intern, may fill out the agreement-form and send it to bergen@iaeste.no. NB: The agreement-form must be signed by the head of administration.

More about the exchange program, employment, EU-contract, contract for the intern, work agreement and payment form.

  Registration in Cristin

Although the deadline is not before February 15 it could be a good idea to begin with registering last year's achievements in Cristin where one has to log in as UiB-employee. In addition to scientific articles, one can also register newspaper articles, debates, dissemination also on radio and TV and so on. A good scheme is the fact that the first author has the responsibility to register research results in Cristin in cases where there are several authors from UiB.

Open meeting with focus on the rights of minorities

All are welcome to a seminar on constitutional protection of minorities:

·       Hva har Grunnlovens vern av samisk språk, kultur og samfunnsliv betydd? (What has the constitutional protection of the Sami language, culture and society meant?)

Wednesday, February 5 at 15:00, Egget, Studentsenteret. Parkveien 1.

STAFF

After a long process with many applicants, it is a pleasure to announce that Dr. Jörn Kersten is employed as Professor of theoretical particle physics at our department. He will begin in his new post as of May 1 2014. Jörn received his PhD at TU München in 2004. After receiving his PhD degree, he has worked as a Postdoc at DESY in Hamburg followed by International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste. The last few years he has been employed as junior research group leader at the University of Hamburg. He is particularly interested in physical phenomena beyond the Standard Model as well as astro-particle physics.

We would like to wish Jörn welcome to the Department of Physics and Technology and Bergen. His wife, Liliana Sevilla, is also a theoretical particle physicist.
