From the head of
department
On Wednesday morning we received a sad message from
the Institute of Energy Technology that our joint SFI-application ENERTHOR - Center for safe and
environment friendly nuclear power plants with Thorium as fuel- must be
abandoned due to the fact that it is not possible to receive sufficient
industrial support for the proposed center. This is really a pitty as nuclear power will be an important source of
energy in the future energy mix. You can have a look at the article in Bergens Tidende from January 19
on how many countries are investing in nuclear power despite the Fukushima
accident. It is really an eye-opener that a source of energy which can
contribute to supply a great deal of energy without releasing greenhouse
gases, does not receive greater attention in Norway; a country with great
investment opportunities in such an important field. Many thanks to Joakim
Nystrand for his great efforts towards the work related to ENERTHOR-proposal
and for representing our Department! Have a good one, News and general

Kapitalens grep om vitenskapen (The capital's grasp of science) Thursday, February 6 at 18:00, Teglverket, Det Akademiske Kvarter. Registration in Cristin
The deadline, February 15, is approaching
for all who would like to register their achievements from last year in Cristin
where one has to sign
in as UiB-employee. In addition to scientific
articles, one can register newspaper articles, debates, dissemination – also on radio and TV and
so on. A good scheme is that if a contribution has several authors from UiB,
the first author has the responsibility of registering the relevant data. Open meeting at the Norwegian Technical

Et energilandskap i endring
(A changing energy
landscape) Tuesday, February 18 at 19:00, Nansensenteret at Marineholmen,
Thormøhlens gate 47. The meeting will be followed
by a simple meal with fish soup and social gathering. The price is 100,- NOK per person. Registration until
15.00 on Thursday February 13. The registration is only required for those
who would like to join the meal. Machine workshop
Perhaps not all employees and students know about
this, but the Department has its own machine workshop. Everyone is encouraged
to pay a visit. The machine workshop provides a great number of services! The Norwegian Physics Students' Conference –

collaboration with the Scientific Committee of Physics and Technology at the
University of Bergen, would like to invite YOU to the
upcoming Norwegian Physics Students' Conference on March 7 – 9! This is a
good opportunity to get to know physics students from other parts of the
country. Exciting lectures from different branches of physics will be given.
This is NOT something you would like to miss, so do not forget to sign
up! h-bar H-bar is open every Friday 19.00-01.00. On Tuesdays, every even numbered week, pub-lectures
are held at H-bar. More info on H-bar's facebook pages. H-bar is run by the Scientific Committee and is
primarily for students – employees are also welcome! IFT in the media
