Study Description
Abstract
The Norwegian Panel of Journalists (NJP) is an internet-based survey of journalists and editors in Norway. The media has a unique power to influence public opinion and provides an important area for debate. By following journalists and editors over time, the panel will collect valuable information about how they work, prioritize, and understand important topics. The panel is initiated and run by researchers from the leading reseach universities and institutions in Norway and is a non-profit project that aims to serve reseach goals.
Some of the questions in this survey are part of a coordinated system of surveys (“KODEM”) which also gathers information about beliefs and convictions of citizens (uib.no/medborger), elected representatives (uib.no/representant), and public administrators (uib.no/NFP). This mode of data collection enables innovative research of groups that together comprise the political body in Norway.
The Norwegian Panel of Journalists is part of the Digital Social Science Core Facility (DIGSSCORE) at the University of Bergen (UiB). The Norwegian Panel of Journalists is also affiliated with the Norwegian citizen Panel, the The Norwegian Panel of Public Administrators, and the Panel of Elected Representatives. The University of Bergen is the owner and treatment manager of the The Norwegian Panel of Journalists. Ideas2Evidence executes the practical implementation of the survey, and are responsible for recruting participants, as well as sending and receiving surveys to and from respondents. The data is stored encrypted and secure in UiB's infrastructure for for safe processing of sensitive personal data in research, ‘SAFE’. The panel has been reported to and processed by the Data Protection Official for Research at the Norwegian Centre for Research Data (NSD) pursuant to the Personal Data Act. More information can be found at uib.no/NFP.
Scope
Geographic coverage: National.
Unit of analysis: Journalists and editors.
Universe: All journalists and editors in Norway.
Methodology
Sampling procedure
All journalists and editors in Norwegian media institutions are invited to participate in The Norwegian Panel of Journalists. Contact information has been collected through bylines and newspaper registeres.
In this establishment round of the panel, a minority of respondents were also recuited through “active enrollment”, whereby respondents clicked a link distributed to the relevant unions, association, etc. More on this in the section on data collection below.
Mode of Data Collection
Recruitment and data collection were carried out using three separate online questionnaires with somewhat differing target audience and recuitment strategy:
-
Survey 1: Open survey directed towards members of the Norwegian Union of Journalist and The Association of Norwegian Editors.
-
Survey 2: Open survey directed towards members of The Association of Norwegian local newspapers.
-
Survey 3: Closed survey using email sent to individual journalists and editors at Norwegian media institutions.
The surveys were practically indentical in terms of content. The reason for this approach stems from a change in recuitment strategy with the aim of 1) reaching a broader group of relevant respondents and 2) increase the response rate by employing a more targeted recruitment method (personal email). The majority of respondents were recruited via survey 3.
The field period for the various surveys in round 1 were carried out in the following period of time:
-
Survey 1: November 2nd 2020 - January 20th 2021
-
Survey 2: November 24th 2020 - January 20th 2021
-
Survey 3: February 16th 2021 - May 21th 2021
For a more detailed description on recruitment of panel members, please see the documentation report.
